I know Ken has spent the week doing his tax. His is the epitome of "Shoe box receipts" accounting lmao.gif

Artie (my accountant) came up yesterday to go over mine. I love Artie...sharp as a tack, loves a cigar, straight as a dye.

I don't mind paying reasonable tax but in this country that is not exactly a reality unless you are a Multinational.

Any form of success is punished with the kicker of a likely tax audit to explain how one is "overachieving". Tax audits are great. You provide an office for three tax office staff for a week + pay your accountants staff to be there for the same time + have your own staff at their beck and call....Nice thinking.gif

So options going forward are limited this year.

  1. Legally adopt about a dozen 18 year old models ....and put them into my discretionary trust.
  2. Liquidate (quickly) and move to a country with nice beaches and a non extradition treaty.
  3. Go home, get drunk and "Pay the Tax".

My heart goes out to all the Aussies currently finalising their tax. You are the heroes of the nation! party.gif

Tell me about it. Been dealing with the IRS at work for the last three weeks...what a pain in the arse!

Yep, a lovely thing taxes. I am all for paying my share for infrastructure, defense, etc., but it hurts none the less. The more you make, the more they take. And if your not rich enough to not miss it, and not poor enough to not pay it, you get whacked extra hard in the giblets.

Here in Northern New Jersey I have a home on 13,000 sq ft. (.30 acres) of land and pay about $10,000 a year in property taxes alone not to mention my Federal and State income tax, and don't even get me started on my auto insurance bill..

But hey at least my cigars are tax free :nyah:

How about that "budget repair tax". Wankers. Or that "flood levy tax" bullshit. I have a quite substantial tax bill due next month for the 2013/2014 year, but that's fine as i haven't paid a cent in tax to the ATO since July 2013. The ATO tried to put me on PAYG tax, paying my taxes in quarters. I called them up and told them to shove it. I should really claim non-residency for Aus tax purposes, but i'd have to "have my bank account offshore". What bullshit. As if foreigners don't have bank accounts in Aus.

Last week I finally lodged my FY14 tax return. Probably get around to doing this year's tax return sometime next year...

I was also sent a form to pay tax in installments every quarter. I filled out the form under the option for 'claiming taxable losses' (or was it offsetting income with deductions?).

I love tax time so much that I tend do it 2 or 3 months after the October 31st cut-off date (for Australian taxpayers lodging without a tax agent) through my accountant, even when I'm owed a refund.

Maryland's new Governor just repealed the "Rain Tax", the previous tax loving administration levied a tax on the percentage of your property that didn't percolate, ie building, blacktop, patios etc. Granted this was focused more towards business, but still, a "Rain Tax".

Yep, we have that in the "city" (town-sized) where I live. They call it the "stormwater run-off" fee...still have to pay it even if we haven't had rain in six months...

Tax. What a tart of a thing. The old man is my agent and the man is soapy. So clean and legit I'm about 8gs short of my fellow workers. What do you do. ....

...thought you were going to talk about getting your tax refund in order to afford more Habanos!

"No, Mrs. Farmer. You can't claim cockroaches as dependents!" - the IRS

My dad got audited this year. The IRS didn't care for his writeoffs and deductions, despite working for the state in his "retirement job."

I complain every year to my accountant about the amount of tax I pay and his only consolation is .....

If you are paying lots of tax you must be earning lots of money !!

I guess its that time of the year where I prepare the last 3 years tax returns then.

Call an accountant to fix it for you. I "forgot" to file for 3 yrs once. Left it to my accountant to sort through it... and came out $17k better off.

In the US we know all to well how the power of the audit can be used against business. I would be willing to put money on the fact Rob's business is being targeted. It's a business that provides a product his government is trying to eliminate. Remember, Al Capone wasn't sent to prison for murder - it was tax fraud and evasion.
