Hi,

I just had my first RASCC after reading good things on this forum and around the web.

I found it had quite a tight draw, not too bad but much harder work than the Party Short I had last night.

Feeling it it felt harder around the foot so I decided to nip off about half a cm. It smoked a bit better and dissecting the bit I nipped off then unravelled, the leaves had one or two hard stems in them, a little less than 1mm in diameter.

Are those bits of the stem the likely cause of a tight draw? Or are they normal?

Sorry if this is a newb question, first bit of a cigar I've dissected!

Thanks!

find yourself a poker, you will be needing it if you keep this habit.........

It's not the stems,it's the way they are made, and you will see it sometimes.........

Exactly. And what you call "stems" are more probably large veins.

And if you're used to NC, then get ready to learn a whole new method of smoking as CC more often than not are rolled much tighter. That is why CC last noticeably longer than NC of a comparable size.

When I smoke NC now, I punch or cut a very small hole and smoke them uber slow since I'm so used to that Cuban draw!

the tight draw is part of what I like about CC- when I smoke too fast I just lose a little flavor instead of ruining the cigar

When I get a very tight draw (I'm drooling when trying to get a puff) I usually pick around the foot till I find a stem (oops large vein sneaky.gif) and using hemostat I pull it out gently, usually opens draw.

I have backward engineered many many Cubans for my research . Also for Frankengars and draw/construction "reroll" issues . I have found more than veins in fact I have removed what could be considered firewood . I actually consider the "object" that is always removed for binders/wrappers a stem anyway and always remove "it" even on my filler leaf. Call it a vein...the main vein, artery or whatever but its a stem in my book...and its not in my cigars.

I've had this issue recently on all types of sticks. At its worst I had a Monte Grand Edmundo with a stick the same length as the cigar that was causing a very tight draw. I was able to extract the whole thing, with much effort, without ruining the cigar. It improved the draw immensely. When you cut the cap you can see right away if there are going to be problems. I usually am able to use my teeth and pull! Life is too short to waste time on an improperly constructed cigar.

Thanks for all the feedback. I mentioned it to my store and they offered to send me another FOC saying it was pretty much as you've all decribed above and just happens from time to time.

I assume I'm allowed to mention them - XXXXXX in the UK, they've been great!

No you're not, and this vendor recently showed through his blog that after many years in this business he still can't tell the difference between mold and plume.

Excerpt:

So how do I know its plume? Well, with the benefit of 35 years of smoking premium cigars I can honestly say I have never ever seen mold on a single cigar and I have seen quite a few cigars as you can well imagine. Plume can be wiped off, mold cannot be wiped off as it permeates the wrapper (I understand it also smells rather awful.) I sometimes wish that someone would actually have a cigar with mold just so I could see one.

What's wrong there, I thought plume could be wiped off and mold leaves a mark as it permeates the wrapper?

The opposite is true, mold can be wiped off easily, and who would wipe plume?

And not to be pedantic but he seems to be saying plume 'can' be wiped off rather than 'should' be wiped off if your point is that plume shouldn't be wiped off.

That's not the point. A well established vendor who writes that he has never ever seen mold on a single cigar is either an ignorant or a liar. That is shocking.

Come on SC, you're such a prude... You claim to be shocked by the idea that a salesman might be fibbing to make a sale? It's like claiming to be shocked by the idea that a stranger on a forum might be impersonating an unbiased/disinterested party or simply be disingenuous... At least the guy pulled off the merchant's web details once you told him it wasn't allowed under forum rules, right?

Goddamit SC, this forum is definitely going downhill :P
