Gents,

the title says it all - I'll be in Johannesburg (in Sandton, to be exact) for work 3 weeks from now.

Any recommendations on what should I be visiting / purchasing there, when it comes to cigars? I probably won't have the rental and will end up either using public transportation or cabbing there.

Thanks

Alex

The Balalaika Hotel (http://www.balalaika.co.za) in Sandton has a cigar lounge and they sell cigars but you can take your own. Their selection is quite small but the prices are not bad.

In Sandton Square, there's a restaurant called The Butcher Shop (http://www.thebutchershop.co.za), great place for a steak by the way. There's a lounge next door to that that will do smokes and drinks. So have a steak in the Butcher Shop then go next door for a cigar and drink. You are paying high street prices so you won't get a bargain but it is worth doing, old fashioned lounge with leather chairs and great service.

There's a tobacconist in Sandton Shopping Centre called JJ Cale (http://www.jjcale.co.za). Nice walk in humidor with a great selection of cigars but again it is high street prices.

The duty free at the airport used to be fantastic but it is now very small. I think FoH international prices are better (can I say that ??) but they don't mind if you inspect the stock. I found a 6 year old box of Siglo II that were great but I think I was just lucky.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Miner,

very happy to read your response. I happened to reserve the room at the Balalaika :)
