I'd say Gino and Frank sum up all there is to say...

I may add I do enjoy a NC every now and again if I'm after a closer on a long night of smoking... usually something from the Opus or Prometheus lines, to round out the night.

I also think that most Americans dismiss Cubans because they smoked a "Cuban" on vacation and it sucked. Or their friend brought some back and they sucked, etc. I'm guessing the people that had negative experience most likely smoked a fake one and automatically determine that all CC's taste like crap.

Honestly, I couldn't care less. If people enjoy NC's then let them, but I'll never choose them over my CC's.

I smoke 90-95% CC now. There are some NC that I really like. Some Davidoffs, Padron 26, 64, family reserve, and various fuentes. For me, it comes down to price. Box of Mag 46 or Epi 1, the cost is around $9 a cigar. Could I buy an NC that I really enjoy for $9? Most of the NC I like are $20 plus. If I'm going to spend $20 plus on a cigar, I will smoke Sir Winston or Espys, or whatever CC I want. Not to mention, there is just a whole different taste to a quality CC that can't be found anywhere else, at least to me.

I take issue with the author's claim that there are "terrific" Honduran cigars.

Oh, well, bless his heart. He likes Liga Undercrowns and Fuente Signatures - guess one-dimensional smokes are his forte, so he can be forgiven for not giving the Cuban terroir bounty its due.

I only smoke a few a month and really look forward to my cigars and more often than not am left a little dissapointed witht he NC that I try after great reveiws from forums. 75% of the time I now just go with CC as I really like the flavours and if it is a dud it is usually because of the questionable QC and not hte tobacco itself. It is just as easy to get either in Australia so there is no bias either way on that front.

Okay then ... Let's just juxtapose a situation for a moment .

When the civil war in Nicaragua was going on and cigar supply was " spotty " at best ... Anybody hear about the president of the U.S. Asking for a couple thousand Nicaraguan cigars ???

The best part of the article comes at the end.

"Tony Benken is the owner of Big Star Cigar Lounge in Mount Juliet, TN. Prior to opening Big Star, he worked for 20 years in the country music industry. He loves a good cigar, racing his Porsche 944, and spending time with his wife and two daughters.

How dare you losers challenge this rock star?

And the other thing Cuban cigars are pretty lame at is naming product.

Opus X Big bad Mother ******

Opus X ***** Juice

My Uzi Weighs a Ton

Etc

I haven't been smoking cigars and I've been smoking cuban's for even less. Generally speaking, I tend to enjoy the flavors from Cubans more. The sole exception is Padron cigars, they reign supreme in my opinion.

Where Cubans suffer is construction and wide variation from box to box to box. I just don't see that with the NCs that I smoke.

In the end I don't think one is necessarily better than the other. Good cigars are good cigars regardless of their nation of origin.

I do enjoy Oliva,Padron and Tatuaje. There are times when I genuinely crave that ligero heavy, spice and coffee laden kick in the head that you get from a good Nicaraguan cigar. But for everything else that's great about cigars, the subtle sweetness, the sweet woods, the creams, the chocolates, the cinnamons, the fruity biscuit flavours etc etc there's only one place you find it.......and they do a pretty good line in a ligero kick in the head themselves!

As a thought..... What American refers to themselves as "us US people?" Couldn't get past that. LMAO. I've always just called myself as an American ... Maybe I'm wrong

Yes, without any question. Maybe this debate is caused by the thawing in US-Cuban relations and the fear of the coming competition in the cigar market in US.

Everyone has his own tastes and his own opinion. If a bunch of people want to argue over Coke or Pepsi I could care less. I don't smoke NC cigars, they are not worth the money and they don't satisfy my tastes. I am glad that someone likes them and someday, maybe they will create a cigar worth smoking for a price worth paying so that I don't have to buy them from the brothers Castro. Until that time comes, I die, or quit smoking, I will continue grin and bear the fact that I am supporting that communist thug bastard and his regime and smoke the cigars that come off of his island.

I may be a hypocrite due to my hatred of communism, but I am one hypocrite with a discriminating palate! Since I cannot eliminate communism, I might as well fret about it while smoking a good cigar verses a bad one!!!

I take extreme offense at this statement. We ARE NOT supporting the Castro regime. We are burning their crops. nyah.gif

I may be wrong, but it was my understanding that HSA profits went to fund their healthcare system. So if I am correct we are supporting the Cuban people with our cigar purchases :). If I am wrong please correct me.

This sums it up for me as well.

Just adding my 2 cents worth I like lots of different things even one things that are 1 dimensional and have multiple tastes Life to me is trying as much as possible no matter where it comes from if you like it smoke it if don't then don't, there's your answer.

I have always wondered what CC could be if quality control was taken as seriously as it is by some NC companies like Padron. I know a few people with access to CC and NC whose tastes run towards NC, however, they all respect and enjoy CC for the unique qualities their tobacco possesses. I do think that there are some people (especially in the US) who simply prefer some of the dark and full Nicaraguan flavors over those of CC. Everyone has their own tastes. It is sad though when Americans in the cigar industry bash CC out of competitive spite. Show some class and give respect where due.

Short answer is yes for me

It is a loaded question. If you love the taste and aroma of Cuban tobacco than heck yes. If you like Nicaraguan, Dominican and Honduran tobacco than no. Taste in cigars is subjective. I happen to think Cubans are not better, they are just a different animal.
