I had a Monte 520 this weekend WOW! Loved it! Possibly one of the best cigars I have ever smoked. I haven't had many Monte's so I was wondering is there a cigar in their lineup that is even close to the 520 taste wise? I just haven't had any luck with Monte's.

try MC Double Edmundos...they're cheaper and are excellent, although it is tough for me to compare the tastes because the last 520 I had was a long time ago.

I have not had much luck with the DE's although I have heard that others have. I prefer to go with the Monte PE for that cacao flavour profile found in the 520.

I second the Double-Edmundo or even standard Edmundo. Very enjoyable cigars. Boxes I've been smoking from have been fairly young, from early 2013 I believe, FYI.

Double Edmundos are crap. Try the Monte PE.

Sheesh, tell us how you really feel! :)

Couldn't be more clearer, which I appreciate.

By the way, what about the Monte Sublimes, for those who've sampled them. How do they compare to the 520's?

Good question: something to aim for this weekend!

520 vs Sublimes vs GE

There is a thread just about it. Search for "sublimes" title. I guess it's the last one.

Don't loose your time and money with the Edmundo and Double Edmundo. The 520 is a Limited Edition, only an other Montecristo LE would offer similar flavors, and these are hard to find and very pricey.

The Monte D from 2005 can still be found in certain european LCDH. The few 520 that I smoked offered some similar dark wood and moka flavours.

In current production the Petit Edmundo is probably your best bet, if you agree with the size...

Ok, so I have racked my brain over this thread because I have smoked a box of 520's since they were released. Put aside they are EL and focus on the profile . . .

At first thought I really couldn't think of anything. I chalked it up to EL blend, Monte band etc, but the more I thought about it the more I was convinced I knew a cigar that was similar. Not identical, obviously, but had smoked very similar in the last year. Now, to help it would be good to know what I get out of the Monte 520:

1) Smooth oily smoke

2) Espresso Latte heavy on the milk

3) Woodiness, but not too much

4) Slight amount of dry coco power

My experience with EL is that they normally have been heavy on the coco or chocolate flavors, but for me the 520 was different. The coco/chocolate was an afterthought in comparison to, say a Grand Edmundo. Knowing this I narrowed down this nagging feeling and had my "AH HA!" moment . . .

Hoyo Epi #2

I know it sounds crazy, but I have two boxes of Hoyo Epi #2 from 2013 when Rob had this insane run of PSP level boxes. They have dark oily wrappers and almost perfect construction. To me they are smaller versions of the 520. They have the same oily vicious smoke, milky latte, woody profile with a hint of coco from the wrapper. Aside from these Epi 2's I can't think of any regular production cigars that are similar to the 520.

Very interesting Orion, I have never had a Hoyo that I like LOL. I wish I could have grabbed a couple of that Hoyo run to see if a PSP Hoyo would be different. Thanks for your thoughts! I got a very similar experience from the 520 but I did also get some pretty decent chocolate flavors.

Frank, I really appreciate your experience here, thanks!

Similarly, this is much appreciated!

For me. Monte Sublime is my all time favorite smoke. It blows away the 520, but thats my opinion .
