Seems like everyone is wishing for this "kid" to fail. Let's not forget he is only 21 years old and asked to lead an NFL franchise that has stunk forever to the Super Bowl. What were you doing when you were 21? I know I was in Cancun on spring break drinking and consuming all sorts of illegal narcotics and loving every minute of it. It was a right of passage, part of being a young man then you mature and realize what's truly important in life. We as adults expect a 21 year old to act like we would act, but we have 20 or more years of life experience than he does. Give the kid a break, he's only human. Now, how bout dem Cowboys?

true, but most of us were not on the verge of a career that would bring possibly 100s of millions of dollars.

Alleged rape (where the accuser is perusing all avenues), theft at a super market, getting up on a table on campus and yelling a very vulgar comment are red flags in my book. It's a lot more than drinking some beers and acting like a fool, which would be what hasn't been reported. And your point is 100% correct about him being only 21....that is exactly the reason why I wouldn't draft him #1 to lead a football team. He just isn't mature enough to handle the fame, fortune and responsibility that comes with it. If he were a DE, LB, OL or almost any other position, sure why not? But a QB is too visible and requires too much - just look at Johnny Football.

He will end up like RG III, EJ Emmanuel and Geno Smith.

All a bust.

Mariota is best QB option.

He could end up being a Byron Leftwich!

I must admit, I have a bit of a bias as I am an Auburn fan so take anything I say about that kid with a grain of salt :)

That being said, I do HOPE he turns out to be a great adult and a great QB in the NFL. My point was more that the Bucs don't really need to gamble on players and need to focus on guys with a great upside and less of downside.

hang on. in fairness to rg3, surely the jury is still out. the bloke has had some problems but we saw what he can do when not injured. if he can put together a season uninjured - sadly, a big 'if' - then we'll either see something special or he can be labelled bust. i don't believe he is there yet. when the skins hit the playoffs this coming season, i'm sure the fair-weather friends will all be back on board.

The QB position is next to impossible to predict. Just look at Kurt Warner and Sam Bradford. One came from nothing and turned out to be phenomenal. The other started out phenomenal (in college) and turned out to be a bust in the NFL. No real way to tell but if I were the Bucs, I'd trade my #1 pick for another team...in its entirety!

Just for the record...I like the Bucs!!

He only has to play one game to be better than Bo Jackson lol3.gif

That hurt...Bo Jackson is a SAINT!! I have a medal around my neck to prove it. Kinda looks like St. Christopher but its really St. Bo Jackson.

Didn't Peyton Manning flop his fruits on a female trainers face while she was down examining him?

Isn't he one of the great examples of a "leader" these days.

Hmmm...maybe the fact that he is the greatest regular season QB in history has something to do with us ignoring his college sexual assault charges....

Its the NFL draft, not canonization into sainthood.

Maybe I'm digging, but the 4 QBs that you mention are all black....so is Winston.

Not accusing you of it, but the media and the NFL has a huge racial bias when it comes to black QBs.

Ken:

I think he was a great athlete and football player. Ever since his injury he has not been the same. All the BS with his TV ads about coming back strong and ready really went south.

In order for him to overcome his mental issues and possible long ter injury, he needs to put on 20lbs of pure muscle. If he has not gone up in weight this off season, I believe they have no chance with him at the helm.

Not racist one bit. Just stating fact when it comes down to being a true QB. I could have went on with others that are not black but non of the where quality picks and are starters.

Sanchez, manziel, tebow and many others.

In this game you need brains!

think you have that pretty right. whatever he does to overcome the injuries will be key. they say he spends an enormous amount of time in the weight room (possibly not taking the correct steroids).

the mental thing. wow, that will be interesting. if he does come through then it will speak volumes as to his character.

Your going back now. What about Heath Shular?

Huge bust!

Statistically, 94% of all 1 overall picks never pan out.

I think he has all the ability to be a true franchise QB, but shanahan really jeopardizes his career!

I was in law school eating Raman noodles...I coudn't afford crab legs either. I wish him well but he hasn't done much to assist himself so far.

someone has to step in here surely? no raiders fans?

the bucs got exactly what they deserved with jackson. they lied to him, attempted to harm his career by having him ruled ineligible for baseball, thinking he'd be forced to play for them. he told them not to draft him because of their underhanded actions because he would not play for them. they drafted him no 1, and he refused to play for them. he stuck to his word. they got what they deserved. a total waste of a number 1 pick. good on him.

he went on to an impressive career with the raiders. not to mention his baseball.

that is a low blow on draft day. but he was 3rd or 4th? not the actual number 1?

3rd or 4th pick, not round.
