DCigar Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 First post! Been reading/lurking a little while, great resource! I'm new to cigars having just really gotten the bug over last few months or so but I'm lucky enough to have smoked a good selection over the last few over the last few m So now I have an idea of the cigars I like and those I don't so much. What I'm trying to understand is what this means in terms of my palate which is not yet refined enough to pick out the various nuances, rather just 'i like that' or 'i don't like that'! I guess my question is, does the following likes/dislikes tell you anything about what I like in terms of flavours and so on and give any pointers as to what to try going forwards which might be better than my scattergun approach! I have noted its more Robusto size I like, I'm not sure why? I actually want to try more Corona or smaller sizes due to time - I'd prefer to prefer smaller cigars for that reason! A 30 min smoke would be perfect for me.... So what have I liked? I've not really liked Romeo no 1 and 2, Cohiba Siglo 1 and 2.So, so on Monte 4 and 5I have really liked Partagas Series D and RyJ Short Churchill and Monte Edmundo. My absolute favourite has been the Partagas Series P No 2 which I found very creamy in the beginning and was a bit of an epiphany for me.Thanks in advance!
JohnS Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 For the shorter smokes, get the following to sample: Partagas Serie D No.6 Partagas Short H. Upmann Half Corona Ramon Allones Small Club Corona
jacksfull Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 One of the problems you'll run into making blanket assumptions on limited smoking experience is that cigars, and especially Cuban cigars, are not necessarily consistent. I've had Monte 4's that weren't so great, and I've had others that were heavenly. When they're good, they're VERY good! And, it isn't even always just a matter of the box code. I've got 3 tenners of Partagas P's all with the same box code. One box is really good. The other two have lighter wrappers and aren't nearly up to par. If I'd never smoked one before, I'd be hooked if my first came from that good box, and probably swear off of them if my first came from one of the others. And, age, or condition, or several other factors can effect them, both positively and negatively.. Bottom line: Smoke more! Try new ones, by all means. But, also don't give up too easily on the ones you don't care for on their first shot across your bow, especially if they tend to get universal acclaim. You may just not have had a really good one yet! 3
CaptainQuintero Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Greetings! It sounds like you are enjoying the richer side of Cubans, opposed to the dry crisp tasting ones. I'd say you might enjoy Ramon Allones Specially Select (Robusto) Bolivar Royal Corona (Robusto) Partagas 898 (Dalia) Upmann Sir Winston (Churchill) RyJ Cazadorez Montecristo #3 (Corona) San Cristobal La Fuerza (Robusto Extra) Por Larranaga Petit Corona (Petit Corona) Enjoy the search, it's the most fun you'll have in this hobby imo
soutso Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 For me, there is a half hour of heaven in the following: San Cristobal El Principe Ramon Allones Small Club Corona Partagas Short Monte 5 The minuto, is a nice consistently good cigar
garbandz Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 For me, there is a half hour of heaven in the following: San Cristobal El Principe Ramon Allones Small Club Corona Partagas Short Monte 5 The minuto, is a nice consistently good cigar I would add: Bolivar CJ PLPC and the winner,,,,,H Upmann Half Corona !!!
Orion21 Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 My favorite PC for the last few years has been the H. Upmann PC. Go find them and try them. Also, the Partagas Short is a really good 30 minute smoke. 1
habanolover Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Who doesn't like Siglo II?? Not sure of your sample size, but I would highly recommend a revisit of this one. As was said earlier, many things can influence your Cuban cigar...MY worst offense , lol, smokin hell out of a box before it's had time to truly settle into my coolerdor environment Oh how many times have I revisited the offended box 2 or 3 weeks later to find those remaining sticks twice as good as the ones smoked too soon. Anyway, 30 min. smokes? I'm really digging a cab of Party shorts right now, a good cab of shorts is just hard to beat. Agreed on the H. Upmann half corona. Lil shy of 30 mins, the R.G. perla is a hit to me as well...Best of luck with the journey! Lettm settle and ENJOY!
DCigar Posted April 28, 2015 Author Posted April 28, 2015 Thanks, some great suggestions, appreciated. RASCC gets a lot of love I see, thats been on my list. Also take the point about needing to try more than one of each cigar, the Siglos are on my list for that reason also. Had a RyJ Petite Corona today which I really liked for the 1st third then tired of.
cigarbreak Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 I'm a newb as well and honestly I would say that many experienced cigar aficionados on this forum point out that your palate will change as you dive deeper trying different marcas and vitolas. I am learning this is very true for me at least. I always try to buy something new almost every box purchase without knowing what it taste like becuase i find part of the excitement is in finding new flavor profiles. Of course I'll read up and ask around for opinions in said box etc. but theres npthing quite like that 'wow' moment when you discover a new cigar that you enjoy to the nub almost everytime. As for your question i'd try different profiles (though close in strength and body to the ones you've enjoyed so far) like: HUpmann Connie A Saint Luis Rey Regios Bolivar Royal Corona San Cristobal de la Habana El Principe Partagas E2
DCigar Posted April 30, 2015 Author Posted April 30, 2015 Actually, no ones mentionded Petit Edmundo? Think that must be a shorter smoke, I have one to try. Really enjoyed Edmundo so will be interesting to see.
