Popular Post Phillys Posted April 24, 2015 Popular Post Posted April 24, 2015 I prefer propane. Are you lighting the head? 6
cigarbreak Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Matches or Spills if I want to be fancy in my garage but usually single torch from a cheapo lighter. I am interested though in a nice soft flame lighter.
reffy Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 Like most of what the others said, I use a torch usually when I'm outside and active. However, when its clear out and when I know I'll be sitting for a while I'll use a spill or soft flame
skalls Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 Promotheus Triple T lighter is my goto one. Have a couple Bughatti Triple lighters I use when I'm golfing or going someplace. Don't smoke indoors and too windy outside here to use matches or cedar for a light flame.
Mr.T Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 Matches (good) have always served me well.. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
PapaDisco Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 Am I doing it wrong? No, no . . . it's always advisable to heat sterilize the head before smoking. 1
sheppsea Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 I prefer using matches whenever I can, or at least a soft flame, but as I am banished to the outdoors at home that isn't often. Normally I use a single jet flame - I have a triple jet but just find it far too much!
Scroats Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 Strangely I don't get the burnt taste with the propane. What I do is build a cherry (usually) on the foot, let it rest a few seconds and take the first puffs. What you don't want to do is engulf the foot in flame. A lot of times I turn the burner down and keep it an inch passed the end of the flame. Patience is key to a good light no matter what you use. When I'm out and about, I switch between torch and matches. If the cigar is cedar wrapped I will use that to light.
PigFish Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Duponts are also my favorite. They are a luxury product that I enjoy using. I will take one to a cigar gathering otherwise they stay at home. Having a Habanera series Dupont stolen from me, it still eats me up… I don't carry them any longer. Most of the time I will carry a Zippo with a jet insert. They work and are refillable. I have quite a few and I use a number of them with Harley branding. If you guys have ever measured the temperature at the foot of a hot cigar, it can reach 1000˚F while you are drawing on the cigar. Complete combustion is good for the cigar taste. I don't buy into any bullshit about a torch lighter hurting a cigar. Maybe if you are a drunken monkey, you might toast your wrapper and singe your nose hairs but that is more a personal problem…! -the Pig
nick2021 Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Prefer matches although they are hard to come by out here....so for now, jet flame will have to do
jacksfull Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 What I do is build a cherry on the foot, let it rest a few seconds and take the first puffs. Same here. Great taste and full flavor from the very first puff this way. I never even put a flame to a cigar when it's in my mouth unless I'm stuck without a torch. I use a single jet torch flame. Better control than multi-jet. I just bought a Scorch Torch Caspian on Amazon that's amazing... about $12 delivered. I also noticed another style in the same brand that is EXACTLY like a Xikar I have that cost 4x as much. The Xikar is broken and I was going to send it in on their warranty, but now I wonder if the cost to mail it in is even worth it when I can buy a brand new one just like it for $10.
Ubergosupro69 Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 I voted spill because in perfect conditions they're easy to get a very good light with, but I use jets most of the time and it's easy enough to not burn the cigar with them. Soft flames are a great way too. I like fire.
kuma Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 jet flame. bought 4 of them at the local mom and pop store. Two small ones and 2 that are designed with the look of a pistol. all 4 of them have the transparent plastic so you can see when you have to refill. nothing worse in not knowing when you are about to run out of fuel I'm sure most people don't carry around a can of fluid. Can't beat the price; twenty dollars for all four of them!
busdriver Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 I am into the soft flame. I travel a lot and butane soft flames are allowed on planes (most places) plus they last a longer than torches without a refill. When in my home town and out for the night I use a cheap triple jet (<$10) if I plan on drinking too much and might lose it meaning 99% of the time I go out. Recently purchased a Colibri softflame wellington and I really like it. Still hang on to my zippo butane for old time sake regardless of it being totally unreliable. Thanks for starting this thread. Great topic and interesting posts!
vatche03 Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 I'm starting to use a soft flame more and more. Find myself scorching the foot too easily with a torch.
atlharp Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 I use a Ronson torch lighter I got at Walmart years back. That thing is a great lighter only fails in cold weather. Lights a cigar good and quick. I also have an old Creme Brulee torch that I use. Other than that matches work good..
TM-US Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Soft flame like Dupont and Dunhill use butane. So they don't really impart any flavor to your cigar. A Zippo runs on Naptha, which will make your cigar taste bad. A cigar jetted soft flame like the double jet Dupont will work very well. I tend toward the jet lighters only because they work in the wind somewhat, while a soft flame will not.
rtrimbath Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I'm with the soft flame for indoor, torch for outdoor camp.
PapaDisco Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Prefer matches although they are hard to come by out here....so for now, jet flame will have to do Where the hell are you? International Space Station?? 1
nikesupremedunk Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Single flame torch is my weapon of choice but lately it's been bugging out on me. It's full but it keeps clicking and I don't get a flame. I see a spark though. It's a lotus lighter but every torch I have seems to crap out in a year or two. Anyone have recommendations for a cheap but reliable torch?

I mentioned above the Scorch Torch Caspian single jet I recently bought on Amazon for $12 delivered. Great lighter! I also bought a triple jet of the same brand, model name Domina, for my daughter's boyfriend that seems to be holding up well. This one also includes a very well designed integrated punch. Went back and ordered a Domina for myself a couple of days ago to use in the car where I don't always have time for single jet sitting at a red light. I noted that Scorch Torch markets one model that's exactly the same as a (broken) Xikar model I own. Between that and my own experiences as a product manager doing business in China, I'd guess they all buy from the same handful of 3rd-party factories (multiple). That means the quality within a brand may not be consistent from one model to the next if produced by different factories. Exceptions, of course, for high-end brands like S.T. Dupont that I assume do their own engineering, if not their own manufacturing. And, of course, there's the classic Blazer PB207 tank torch. They're about $40 now, but the last one I had lasted a good 10 years before it crapped out.

Orion21 Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 A single flame torch lighter. It isn't too much or too little flame. I like to slowly toast the feet of my cigars before taking a few puffs to start the smoking experience.
