rmill3r Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 I know this topic probably comes up a bit, so sorry if this is overdone, but wanted to see what people's favorite lesser-known favorite marcas/vitolas are in the world of Habanos? Which ones do you love that don't really get the spotlight?
Puros Y Vino Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 PL Panatellas. Quintero Panatellas Fonseca Delicias. I think the RyJ Cazadores don't get much love but I enjoy them. 3
tjohn7 Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Well I'm not sure if anything I like is lesser known, but SCdlH and Sancho Panza are two of the best marcas in my mind. Now don't go buying those and make them tougher to get! 1

garbandz Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 in the past they were exceptionally strong. since '08 I have noticed they have declined in strength from the '08 level, which I would not have rated as "strong"... I have read posts of the old days when you would have to smoke them outside,to avoid stinking up the furniture........... 1
laficion Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 QdO and the HdM's Epicure No. 1 are the one's I don't hear that much about. Guy
Smallclub Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 I have read posts of the old days when you would have to smoke them outside,to avoid stinking up the furniture........... 15 years ago you could unclog your toilets with their smoke. Very agressive smell. Also, they rarely had the smooth wrappers they often have now, they were often dressed in incredibly rustic dark and veiny wrappers that gave them a "tough bad boy" look.

Maplepie Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Hmmmmm... H. Upmann Epicures, Majestics Cohiba Siglo III Quintero Brevas (aluminium foiled!) and... Troya Club Coronas
TonyAccardo Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 I'm sure I'll be stoned for saying this, but I believe, to my tastes anyways, that the Upmann Regalias since 2010 and especially 2012 and 2013 are some of the best petit coronas coming out of Cuba today. Maybe I've been lucky with these and unlucky in the others like the Bolivar PC, Monte #4, Siglo II, but I just can't see paying $40-70 more for the exact same vitola when I've got boxes upon boxes of the Regalias that blow these other, more "premium" versions away in both texture/quality of the tobacco used and the flavors/complexity produced by setting them aflame. I'm not saying that cigars like the Bolivar PC or Monte #4 are bad at all, in fact they're great, but I think the Upmann Regalias has them beat from all of my experiences thus far and I'm glad they haven't gotten popular and that you very rarely hear anyone raving about them on any habanos forum. Once or if that ever does start to happen, you can be guaranteed that one of two things will happen if not both....1. The quality will begin to take a precipitous dive and 2. They will be discontinued in short order. The Troya Club Corona is another fantastic cigar, especially with 5 plus years on it that you never really hear about from other forum members. Again, I'm glad they're not popular. 1
ErikB Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Partagas Mille Fleur and I like the RyJ Mille Fleur as well.

I'd be curious to hear yours or anyone else's take on the flavor comparisons between the 2.

The Regalias is WAY more rustic and earthy than the Upmann pc. It's actually not a mareva, but a petit corona vitola, because until 2002 it was a machine made cigar (just like the RyJ No.2, the RyJ Mille Fleur, Partagas Mille Fleur, etc.).

Now why do I want to try a cigar you can use to unclog a toilet with?

Ah interesting, thanks for the info. The vitolas are hard to get a handle on. Does that mean Por Larranaga PCs used to be machine made? AFAIK they're marked not as mareva but as petit corona, vitola-wise...
rmill3r Posted April 10, 2015 Author Posted April 10, 2015 To those saying PLPs, any differences (flavor wise) between PL Panatellas and Montecarlos other than size, obviously?

earthson Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 To those saying PLPs, any differences (flavor wise) between PL Panatellas and Montecarlos other than size, obviously? Yes. I've found the MC to be much more elegant and the flavor develops along the length of the smoke. The Panetelas are more hit-or-miss - the quality (of flavor) can differ from one stick to the next. I've had some amazing Panetelas as well as some absolute dog rockets. 1
Nrengle Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Partagas Mille Fleur, Hoyo Palmas Extra. Had a box of the Mille Fleur and every single one of them were plugged to the point I couldn't smoke them. I solved the issue by taking an ice pick straight through them with a guillotine cut, but would still plug up eventually.
