partriar Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 What weird flavours have you had while smoking? I was smoking a cheap NC last night (EPC Cardinal Maduro 52) Not a bad smoke, just one that comes and goes and you pay no attention too. Anyway I digress.. In the last 3rd i pick it up, too a long draw and BAM! Had the most intense unmistakable Kalamata Olive flavour. Blew me away, complete shock. I do quite like olives but was a very strange phenomenon.
wonky Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Hehe I once got banana taffy flavor from a nc. And no it wasn't "flavored".
finecigar Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 One of the worst I experienced was a flavor unmistakably like rose water. That was on an older RyJ... Also have tasted strange burnt peanut butter, asiago cheese flavor, celery, and a whole lot more- mostly among aged cigars. Not necessarily bad, just unexpected and bizarre. Should start a journal on those flavors!
RickHendeson Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 These peculiar tastes are a mystery. I've often wondered if its a foreign adulterant, or did the roller spill something, or is my brain playing tricks on me, or what

Ubergosupro69 Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 I've gotten olives before, fish, sauerkraut, really strong candy banana flavor. Sometimes I'll also get some more traditional cigar flavors, but so pure and overpowering that I'm not sure if it's the cigar or just some weird synapses firing off in my brain. Chocolate so strong it tastes like I'm just eating a chocolate bar, or cherries, coffee, toasted nuts, etc.
ethernomad Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Was smoking a Partagas Shorts the other day and got a very salty flavor throughout the last 3rd.
BlueDevil07 Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 I got a sulfur egg-like flavor from an RA Sup once. It didn't have much rest post-shipping though.
Nrengle Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Was smoking a Partagas Shorts the other day and got a very salty flavor throughout the last 3rd. I've experienced similar on some other cigars. I've also had what I can assume the Japanese call umami show up in a few H Uppmann sticks.
leftimatic Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 My taste buds suck at the best of times but Hoyo Epi #2's always give me this odd perfume flavor. Its like I'm sitting next to an over perfumed old lady on an airplane. With no escape. Smoked 5 or so at different times from different places same result. Too young maybe? I dunno. I wish I could pick up leather and vanilla coffee cream notes that well. Or any other flavour for that matter.
DWC Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Mint recently in an ERDM. It not only tasted like it but it had that minty coolness to it too. I've also had perfume from a box Hoyo du Prince before but it went away after some time. and recently from a single Monte #4
TonyAccardo Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 The rose water flavor you were gett One of the worst I experienced was a flavor unmistakably like rose water. That was on an older RyJ... Should start a journal on those flavors! The rose water flavor you were getting from that RyJ was very much what you were tasting and alot of us, including me who has an entire shitty box of Hoyo #2's, has tasted this flavor in cubans. It is the chemical Beta Damascenone that was causing it. It is commonly found in cured leaf and can also be responsible for causing the smell of baked apples. I firmly believe that it is tobacco that has not been fermented properly or enough that this flavor is strongly present in. A little bit is ok if it is balanced by other flavors such as honey, plum, tobacco, blackcurrant and such, but when it is like the cigar has been dipped in Chanel No.5, it is very undesirable and a completely negative attribute to the tobacco. There have been alot of cigars coming out of Cuba lately that have had this unfortunate trait. 1

I have a couple of boxes just like it and it is an unfortunate thing to have happen to you. It is just as likely to happen to a box of JL2 as it is to a box of BRC's so tto say I'm going to stay away from Hoyo Epicure #2's from now on would be ignorant of me. Knowing how cigars are manufactured, banded, and boxed in Cuba, it has nothing to do with "brands" and everything to do with a bad batch of underfermented, rushed tobacco being used in the factory the day these were rolled. By the way, your Epicure #2's wouldn't happen to have darker than normal wrappers on them would they? Mine do, no different in color from a Cohiba maduro but a dry, scentless, dark maduro and yes, they're 100% genuine. Just a bad batch of habanos. I've told myself that I'll give myself another year of buying but if things don't turn around in that time, I'm done with giving my money to a company/government who could care less whether they put out a good product or not. Yes, they also put out an amazing cigar at times too but you either have to pay through the nose or get really lucky in what you recieve, even when buying from an LCDH!
Smallclub Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 There have been alot of cigars coming out of Cuba lately that have had this unfortunate trait. That's a bold assertion. I haven't encountered that taste in the last 10 years (and I smoke everyday), ans the topic is less often discussed on forums compared to the previous decade… 1

Didn't buy a box they have been purchased in samplers, from local B&Ms and gifted. Over a period of 3 years. Just a taste I get that I cant stand.
santela Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Soap. The very first RASS I've ever smoked was soapy detergent flavored. Tossed it after an inch with no improvement. That was also the last RASS I smoked. I know it's most likely just a bad sample and poor luck on my part, but I just have no plan to try it again.
habanolover Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 DIRT! I love what I perceive as the taste of Cuban soil in a smoke. Guess I'm odd in that I also enjoy a passing hit of that "perfume/ rose water" note every now and again...just adds a little character to the smoke for me.

finecigar Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Ya don't get me wrong I don't hate the rose water flavor... If it is subtle and complements other flavors, but when it just hits me abrupt like taking a doubleshot of rose water it's disgusting. I'll add, it's rare. Not a flavor I run into frequently
ethernomad Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 This is not a flavor, but right now my desktop humidor smells like graham crackers. It didn't smell that way until I put in a Cuban sampler from our host. I've sniffed every cigar individually and can't find which one is doing it. I kinda like it.
FLB03TT Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Have had the subtle, but clear, perfume note on the 1st and maybe 2nd sticks from a couple new boxes in the last several years. I specifically recall it happening with a JL2. Thought the box was a bust, but after a long rest, 4-6 months, I never tasted the perfume again and the balance of the sticks were excellent. I think the problem is usually associated with quite young boxes and the solution, at least in my cases, has been some down time. As a rule, I don't smoke any sticks before, at least, their 1 year B-day.

Haven't many of your posts been about how great your Epi 2s are? Are they great or dark and dry? potpourri is rare, but happens to me too. 2
TonyAccardo Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Haven't many of your posts been about how great your Epi 2s are? Are they great or dark and dry? potpourri is rare, but happens to me too. I've a total of 5 boxes. 2 are bad to my taste and the other 3, MOB Nov 14, are fantastic. You may follow my posts more than I do myself but I do not recall raving about how great my cigars are. Maybe you can refresh my memory.
