Let's go Blue Jay's has taken in a new meaning since the post above and the blockbuster trades to add starting pitching and bullpen help to the highest scoring team in the league. Since 7/31 the Blue Jay's have won 6 out if 7 games including 5 straight wins. Should be an interesting series in New York this weekend.

The ivy at Wrigley Field was supposedly inspired by similar ivy at Bush Stadium (then Perry Field) in Indianapolis, which is where I grew up watching baseball. We have a pretty popular AAA team, and

Mets all the way

Yes, funny what a few quality mid-season trades can do for your team. The Amazin' Mets have won six in a row now since acquiring Yoenis Céspedes, Juan Uribe, Kelly Johnson and Tyler Clippard.

Definitely doing okay now with one month to go. And what about you Cub fans...are you hanging in there? The Cub season has been better than expected so far has it not?

As for me, I'm stunned from the massive Mets comeback against the Nationals today. To win 8-7 after been down 7-1 in the sixth is unheard of. Mets fans are you starting to BELIEVE? I'm not yet as season 2006, 2007 and 2008 is still in the back of my mind, especially 07!

Was my prediction right or what rotfl.gif

My prediction was correct as well up until the trade deadline. Thankfully Rogers finally stepped up and let Alex make some big moves. It's been a great month and a bit being a Blue Jay's fan, that's for sure.

The media and many of the fans however seem so hell bent on a World Series that I think they might be missing the best part of a winning season, and that's the journey.

Sure it might be a bit of a let down if they don't go deep into the playoffs but for me it's been very satisfying just watching meaningful baseball in August and September. Better still is that we're battling the hated Yanks for top spot. Should be a hell of a stretch run.

Go Jays!

Until the Rockies get a new owner, I don't think we will see any winning seasons anytime soon ok.gif

Let's go Royals!!!

Same here Heath. This city is absolutely baseball crazy right now with the Royals doing so well. I'm hoping we get to the World Series again this year and win it thirty years after our first title.

Yeah, well 2014 was a momentous season with one game and one run in it for the Royals. The Royals have done well despite adding Johnny Cueto to your starting pitching line-up.

Yep. Johnny is a bum no showing twice to fan event's. I'd fire him just for that

That would be sweet. the energy around the city is nice. I hope the chiefs do the same.

Cubs!!!!

Yes, The Cubs have been quite surprising. I wonder what uproar might ensue about the fact that, at this point, the Cubs .586 is better than all but one (KC) of the ALs leader and Wild Card teams, and both the East and West NL leaders, but since the Cubs are in the same division as STL and PIT they have to be content with their Wild Card position. I'm not calling for a change, but I can understand how the team and fans might be looking at the standings and saying "You gotta be kidding me! HOU has a playoff berth with .539 and the Cubs don't?"

Arrieta, Bryant make history in Cubs' win

CHICAGO -- Jake Arrieta made history with his 20th win of the season, but third baseman Kris Bryant jumped into his spotlight with his record-breaking home run in a 4-0 victory over the Brewers on Tuesday night. The win leaves Chicago two games behind Pittsburgh in the hunt for the National League's top Wild Card spot but improves its magic number to make the postseason to three.

Arrieta became the first pitcher in the Majors to win 20 games this season and the first Cubs pitcher since Jon Lieber in 2001 to win 20 in a season. He allowed three hits and struck out 11 in his fourth complete game of the season to record his 18th consecutive quality start -- also the most in Cubs history.

It's the third shutout and fourth complete game of the season for Arrieta, who became the first Cubs pitcher since Kerry Wood in 2003 to throw four complete games and the first since Greg Maddux in 1992 to toss three shutouts.

"It just means that I'm putting my team in position to win ballgames," Arrieta said. "At the end of the day, that's our goal, to try and pile on as many as we can, especially where we are at in the season. Wins now, at this time, are more important than ever. I'm just happy about getting one for the team and keeping the momentum going into tomorrow."

Milwaukee couldn't provide any run support for starter Tyler Cravy, who tossed four innings and allowed just two runs, on Bryant's 26th home run of the season. With the homer, Bryant broke Billy Williams' club rookie record for the most in a single season, set in 1961, and he also holds the rookie record for RBIs (98) in a season.

"I was joking around with [Jake] after the game here, and I told him he always has to outdo me," Bryant said.

Congratulations to Jake Arrieta on a 20 game win season, a most difficult task for modern day pitchers!

Yogi Berra passes away; Hall Of Fame legend was 90

A loss that unquestionably transcends the game has sent all of baseball into deep mourning. Yogi Berra -- Hall of Famer, all-time Yankees legend, World War II veteran, master of misstatement and beloved international icon, is gone. Berra died Tuesday night -- on the 69th anniversary of his Major League debut -- at age 90.

The announcement came early Wednesday morning and was announced via the Yogi Berra Museum's Twitter account.

His passing has created a void that cannot be filled, even by the myriad anecdotes -- some accurate, others exaggerated -- about him and the dozens of records he established. No American sports figure other than Babe Ruth, Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali and perhaps Arnold Palmer and Joe DiMaggio was more recognized by the general public in the 20th century. And though his profile had become significantly lower in the last decade, Berra had retained a conspicuous place in the American consciousness. He was extraordinarily popular.

He still is routinely cited, quoted and appreciated by presidents and plumbers, commissioners and comedians, wideouts and waitresses, goalies and garbage collectors, authors and auto mechanics, admirals, network anchors and professional wrestlers. All felt a kinship with the bow-legged catcher from The Hill in St. Louis who was the inspiration for a cartoon and known everywhere by his unique nickname.

"While we mourn the loss of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, we know he is at peace with Mom," his family said in a statement released by the museum. "We celebrate his remarkable life, and are thankful he meant so much to so many. He will truly be missed."

Berra is most readily linked to championships in the game he played from 1946, when he broke in with the Yankees, until '65, when he made a brief return to active duty and took his final at-bat with the Mets. His teams played in the World Series 14 times and won it 10 times. No other player has a comparable October resume.

An enormous loss to the game, famous for his misstatements known as "yogi-isms", read more about his passing in Marty Noble's article here...http://m.mlb.com/news/article/151137752

I'm a major Yankees fan, I was taken to the Stadium (the OLD one, may its old ugly concrete bones rest in pieces) from a very young age. So I was very sad to hear of Yogi's passing today keeping a specific moment in my family history.

July 18th, 1999, Yankees taking on the Expos in the Bronx in an afternoon game. After years of idiocy, George Steinbrenner comes to his senses and decides that Yogi has a place in Yankees lore, so it's Yogi Berra Day. My parents and my little brother went to the game; I was away at summer camp in Ontario. My parents picked up a pair of knock-off commemorative t-shirts outside the ballpark for me when I come back, whoop dee doo. If that date sounds familiar to Yankees fans, that's because it should: David Cone threw a perfect game that day against the Expos, which at the time included Moises Alou and Vladimir Guerrero. They kept, and framed everything: ticket stubs, my father's scorecard, pictures, the front page of the next morning's NYT sports section. All because Yogi was brought back to Yankee Stadium that day...or at least, that's what I tell myself. So long, Yogi -- we'll miss you.

LET'S GO YANKEES!

Takeru Kobayashi and some friends tried to end the Curse of the Billy Goat ... by eating a goat

This one comes to us via the rich tapestry that is humanity's obsession with sports: Five competitive eaters in the Chicagoland area came together on Tuesday night to devour an entire goat as part of a ritual to exorcise the infamous "Curse of the Billy Goat" from Wrigley Field and the Cubs.

The Curse of the Billy Goat, for the uninitiated, refers to an incident at Wrigley Field in 1945, when Billy Goat Tavern proprietor Billy Sianis was asked to leave the historic ballpark during a World Series game due to the presence of his pet goat. So, the story goes, he put a curse on the team, saying, "Them Cubs, they ain't gonna win no more." While they have actually won a great many baseball games since then, they have yet to claim baseball's top prize.

Three of the goat-eating event's organizers, Alice Chiu and eaters Patrick Bertoletti and Tim Brown, are lifelong Chicagoans and local restaurateurs. Somehow, they connected the dots and realized that, lo, if the Cubs were ever to win the World Series, it would only happen after an entire goat was eaten at rapid pace within the city's bounds.

Believe that: Mets win first East title since '06

CINCINNATI -- Since 11:43 p.m. ET on Oct. 19, 2006, the moment that Adam Wainwright's curveball dropped into Yadier Molina's glove and the Cardinals advanced to the World Series, the Mets began yearning for this. Three thousand, two hundred and sixty-four days passed between champagne baths for the Mets, longer than all but three big league teams. They lost their way at times; their photo albums depicted an historic collapse, then a more modest one, then a half-dozen consecutive losing seasons.

Now this. Lucas Duda hit a grand slam in the first inning Saturday at Great American Ball Park and the Mets never looked back, winning a 10-2 game over the Reds to clinch their first NL East title and playoff berth since 2006. Matt Harvey pitched into the seventh, David Wright iced things with a late three-run homer and the bullpen did the rest, inciting a jubilee in the visiting clubhouse.

"I can't be more excited or more proud to wear the orange and blue," Wright said. "I bleed orange and blue. To be able to celebrate with these fans, this city, this team, is a privilege."

The Mets are a half-game ahead of the Dodgers for home-field advantage in the NL Division Series, should L.A. clinch the NL West.

Only the Blue Jays, Mariners, Marlins and Astros had gone longer without a playoff berth. The Mets felt it from deep within, even as their roster turned over and only Wright remained from the 2006 team. They changed their manager and their general manager, the bulk of their field staff and front office. They made signings and trades, culminating with their acquisition of Yoenis Cespedes 13 minutes before the July 31 non-waiver Deadline. Days later, they chased down the Nationals.

Now they are partying. Duda set the first streamers airborne with his grand slam off Reds starter John Lamb, belting it a few paces shy of the Ohio River. Curtis Granderson also homered, Michael Cuddyer hit a two-run double and Harvey raced past his faux season innings total of 180, delivering 6 2/3 more and allowing just two runs.

"We knew we wanted to win this game," Harvey said. "We didn't want to wait until tomorrow. We didn't want to wait until Philadelphia. This game was probably the most important game of the year."

Along the way, the Mets moved into a virtual tie for home-field advantage with the Dodgers, their likely NL Division Series opponent. Only seven games stand between the Mets and their first postseason moments since the 2006 NL Championship Series, which ended with Wainwright's strike-three curveball to Carlos Beltran.

"It's gratifying to see it come together," Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said. "You never quite know when it's going to happen. But you have to have faith."

It's been a long time for Mets Fans, nine years. For Terry Collins, the oldest Manager in Baseball at 66, and after 10 years and 1681 games, he finally gets to go to the postseason.

And incidentally, if you are wondering (which you probably are), those cigars that Bartolo Colon, Yoenis Cespedes and Jeurys Familia are enjoying are Non-cuban, confirmed by Cespedes, the Mets' native Cuban post-July 31st tradeline acquisition who has transformed the club since he came from the Tigers.

I am sure the Pittsburgh Pirates will be offering some nice 3rd baseline seats to Steve Bartman (wherever he should be) for next Wednesday's game! Probably the most famous guy in any team's history who was not directly affiliated with the team.

Blue Jays clinch American League East and going for top spot in the league. If they play to there potential they should win the World Series ( even if the other teams play to their potential).

Aah Steve Bartman. Unbelievably, there's a whole Wikipedia entry about him!
