JerseyG Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 Had my first Epi 2 tonight and used a punch for the first time. Had me wondering why I've never tried one before. Thoughts?
Lotusguy Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I can carry a Punch on my keychain - a cutter, not so much
Foz Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 Recently switched to a punch myself. Wish I did so sooner!
JohnS Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I think it's a matter of preference, you need to experiment to find out how you like to draw on a cigar, in my opinion. I like a punch or bullet cut on lower gauge cigars (40 or 42 ring) as I like how the smoke is directed in my mouth and not onto my tongue. I use a v-cutter on cigars above a 46 ring gauge, but I would be in the minority. I use a guillotine cut on a piramide. The reason remains the same, I prefer the smoke in my mouth to savour the flavours, away from my tongue, but again that's my preference. I advocate all cigar enthusiasts to find out what works for them in relation to cutting cigars. Who knows, I may evolve in my preference and one day prefer flipping the cap with my fingernail!
santela Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I smoke piramides too often to be bothered with owning a punch.
Onelove Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 Have been contemplating buying a punch lately, mostly wondering if a new dupont punch is worth it. I find the quality of their lighters and pens to be excellent even though I've only tested the waters with second hand items. Might have to bite the bullet to satisfy my curiosity.
LordAnubis Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I may evolve in my preference and one day prefer flipping the cap with my fingernail! That's what I do, more out of convenience. Don't have to carry anything around.
jat Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 Had to use a punch (attached to my lighter) when I left my cutter behind. Found it easier on the head, with less damage to the cap, less chance of over cutting. I eventually bought a Siglo 3 ring swivel punch (8,10,12 mm) and now use it all the time. It's also easier to take on a plane. I have lost a few cheap cutters to overly zealous customs people.
Rushman Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I prefer a punch. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Rye Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I tend to use a punch most frequently and I have various sizes and like to go with the biggest that will cleanly work for the vitola. I am very picky about my punch, and I will not use ones with the sharpened edge tapering toward the outside. I find they put the pressure outward on the cap increasing the likelyhood of a cracked head which drives me nuts when trying to enjoy a cigar. Nothing worse then part of the cap sticking to your lip after taking a great draw, then having to deal with that, or worse, the unravelling wrapper for the rest of what was supposed to be an enjoyable time. When smoking any cigar with an overly round head, I prefer to use a cutter, and always use a cutter for torps. For some reason I can't figure, the V cut drives me nuts. I guess it's mouthfeel and smoke direction, and I keep trying it out to see why so many of my friends swear by that method, but it's not for me.
Ginseng Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 Pocket knife. The perfect cigar prepping device. Wilkey

FLB03TT Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 Will only V cut a torpedo. Opens the draw up perfectly. I punch most everything else. Have a Promethius lighter with two different sized punch cutters. The big punch is good for any viola up to 50-52. Rarely smoke any stick larger than that. About the only time I use a conventional double blade cutter is if I've got nicotine/tar buildup around the punch hole. Will clip off 1/16" and all is good again.
Rye Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 You need to get lickin' that cap!Really?? You mean my current cognac dunking isn't good enough?
CaptainQuintero Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Really?? You mean my current cognac dunking isn't good enough? Cognac? You need to start dipping in melted caramel!
