Thanks for sharing. That should be mandatory viewing for every person that ever wonders why different boxes of the same marca can be totally different flavor wise. It's not an exact science!!

Just back from Cuba and still sorting through pictures and video. On a day out at Hector Luis Prieto's farm, I asked Miguel, Hector's resident cigar roller, if he would wear my GoPro while rolling a

Nice stuff! It was interesting to see how the two halves of the bunch was placed; the middle of the leaf being at both ends. Obviously techniques are different but I had thought the tip of the leaf always went at the foot of the bunch.

I'm not sure about it looking easy, it kind of put me off growing my own leaf and making my own rough farmies, based off this mine would be VERY rough and ready!!

I thought that the planting, growing and fermenting would be the hardest part!

Fantastic post, thank you! So, how did it smoke? What's the taste profile of this smoke with all single farm tobacco??

I remember reading a post where, I believe it was, Mr. Prieto was transcribed as saying that tobacco from a farm/ field one side of the street would be very different in taste characteristics from that grown on the opposite side of the street. I remember being totally fascinated by that.

I have to say I had exactly the same thought, also, the different leaves although individually rolled (in the old style) aren't 'blended as such as the cigar is made, its two of those then three or four of those, but I suppose they get mixed up when the two halves come together as CQ has said. I think I am going to end up watching this lots and learning more each time.

One question Andy, was the roller local or had he been trained and worked in a factory?

I never asked him but I would doubt very much if he ever had factory training. Miguel is Hector's right hand man on the farm and has been for years. Farmers have always rolled cigars for themselves, some more nicely finished than others.

That cigar was fairly rustic-looking but it was a very windy day as you can see and it was cold. Miguel wasn't happy. He wasn't going to roll at all other than a coach load of lost Brazilians (who can be heard in the video) showed up on the farm.

On better days Miguel rolls some of the nicest looking cigars I've ever seen, he also uses a mold. A lot of it comes down to materials. They have good filler and access to some of the best wrapper in the world.

I as well as others here are lucky enough to have some from Miguel at rest. When we were there last November they were a little wet to smoke but the construction was great as well as the aroma. Looking forward to trying them again after a year of sleep.

Looks like the video hit the "big time." It's up on the Gawker Media Sploid blog here: The Roller.

Wilkey

Did Sploid/Gizmodo contact you, Andy?

That is awesome, quite a bit of work goes into each cigar. You can see why there can be so much variation from roller to roller. Makes you appreciate the talent of the master rollers. Thanks for sharing that and what a great idea.

Neither did but I don't really mind. It's over 10,000 views now and that's a good thing. To be honest it's a side result of something bigger I'm trying to get funded so the free marketing isn't a bad thing.

LiveLeak have been in touch regarding the GoPro thing so I'll see what they have to say.

In As a matter of fact I would probably ask them not to mention my name but at least a contact would be polite IMO.

And good luck with your funding. I am sure it will be something cool.

Let me know if somehow (?!) I can help.

That's very kind of you, thank you. But I need to try all the usual routes. There are quite a few and I haven't even started yet. Thank you though.
