Steer clear of me... I have the Fake bug!

Recommended Posts

Just got back from a lovely week in Cancun with my daughter. We were on the Isla Mujeres, about a half hour boat ride off of Cancun. Lovely resort, very expensive called Zoetry. Other than we had no hot water and our room smelled like poop, we really did have a good time.

Found a couple of lads to smoke cigars with, and they got theirs at a walk in humidor in "el gift shop". Now, you have to understand, there is absolutely no shopping on this island, so after a day or two even the itchiest guy might need to spend some dough. A petit corona was at least $50US. He said it was terrible. Surprise surprise.

I went in and checked and every box was fake. The green tax stamps were color photocopies, there were no date/factory codes on the bottom and the one box of Cohiba Maduros they had loooked like they were dipped in brown paint.

When I asked Matthew if I should say anything, he said, "What? You think they don't know? Who do you think you are? Let them have their fun (he meant the customers) and quit pretending you are miss cigar know it all".

Fortunately I had cigars to give the guys I met so they did not have to suffer any longer.

Oh if that were only true for me...

Today I took dog Blue to his friend Harley's for a romp outside. Harley's dad John just got back from Cuba. You know what is coming. I TOLD HIM PLEASE DO NOT BRING ME ANY CIGARS!

I have no idea what the story is. I am very grateful for the gift, don't get me wrong. I did not even think anyone would go to the trouble to fake a box of Trini fundadores. I cut one open carefully and filled with pieces. :-(

Here is a close up of a couple of interesting points.

1. Never saw the small label before.

2. The green tax stamp has the UPC code AND the hologram

3. the PSD4 wrapper looks triple capped

4 note in first post, the Trinis has a date stamp. In Mexico, none had anything even resembling a date stamp or a legitimate tax stamp.

did you check the bar code # against the Habanos SA website? Interesting to find out if they show up or do all three show the same #.

Only the PSD4 had that and interesting enough, it is the only one with what looks like MUL NOV 14 on the bottom?

the UPC code is 000003 394043

Hologram is a POS

I think the small label is supposed to be the tabacuba one that's usually hidden beneath the seal

Shoulda PM'd me. For $50 I would have had some delivered to your room, along with some anti-poop air freshened.

Send them to ubb and catfish compliments of myself please Lisa....

They would just claim they were real because the bands looked good and the cap was triple!

The cigars look lovely. They even smell nice. The ones that came with labels had them inside the box. I sliced open one of the Fundadores and guts spilled out of it like when they opened the shark on the dock in JAWS. I think I saw Jimmy Hoffa's wedding ring.

Oh jeez I could go on.

Like I said, I am grateful for the gift from my neighbour from Cuba. Honest. He just dipped his toe in my pool, man.

Thank you for testing out the new film thing on my macBook keyboard. I just spit Diet Coke on it.

You guys are hilarious!

And they do look nice... I think he paid $40 a box. Before he went, I told him unless he pays over $200US a box, he is not in the right store. And I do not want him spending money on cigars I have not inspected. SO DON'T DO IT.

zzzzzzzzz.....

***NEWS UPDATE***

How many times did I say, "Don't get me wrong, it is not that I ungrateful for the gift?" I did not want anyone to think I was some kind of brat that only likes my beautiful Czar cigars and does not appreciate the thought that counts etc.

Got the call.

The fellow that gave the fake cigars wants to be paid for them. Not only that, he insists they are real and his friend got them straight from the factory. He wanted to go on and on about it. My girl friend, his sort of wife, who delivered them, wanted an explanation and that took me almost 15 minutes in person, over and over. You know how long 15 minutes is???

Add to that, an argument that 100 pesos is NOT worth ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY DOLLARS.
