nivanov Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Hah! Stumbled upon a neat piece of history!! The Fonseca marca and who is represented on the inner lithograph of the dress boxes? Did you know that his last name was actually Fonceka?? My deduction Mr. Holmes, is that the inner litho on the Fonseca cigar boxes is none other than........................................General Deodoro da Fonceka the first President of Brazil. Does anyone else have a different interpretation? 1
oliverdst Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 I think it's not the same Fonseca (cigar brand). And maybe I am wrong but the Brazilian marshal has his name written as Fonseca (no "c" and no "k"). At least as far as I know in that period of time (beggining of XIX century) Fonseca would not be written with "k" (nowadays neither). And the flag, is the US flag, right? I googled "General Deodoro da Fonceka" and could find only one (and very interesting) result: https://www.google.com.br/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=%22General+Deodoro+da+Fonceka%22&nfpr=1 Anyway, good memorabilia.
nivanov Posted February 21, 2015 Author Posted February 21, 2015 The above sign dates to 1900's, the portrait on the label matches closely to the images of the General found on Google and to the inner lithograph on the box, your thoughts?
oliverdst Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 The brand was created in 1892 by Francisco E Fonseca.
acidmase Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 also IMO fonseca is gonna get the ax next week!
CaptainQuintero Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I read a long time ago that the brand was made by the owner of the port with the same name, blended to compliment his port wines? No idea if it is actually true though!
CaptainQuintero Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 also IMO fonseca is gonna get the ax next week! No idea how it's survived as long as it has to be brutally frank, I've never had one that you could draw air though! I'm guessing the rice paper novelty factor keeps sales ticking over, I would imagine those sales are painfully slow though
Smallclub Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I read a long time ago that the brand was made by the owner of the port with the same name, blended to compliment his port wines? Never heard about that, and Fonseca is a very common name in Spain and Portugal.
CaptainQuintero Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Never heard about that, and Fonseca is a very common name in Spain and Portugal. This could be another one of my strong cheese inspired cigar delusions. Add it too the list!!
nivanov Posted February 22, 2015 Author Posted February 22, 2015 At least now, we all know who the first President of Brazil was, nevertheless looking at the images of both Fonsecas it could be argued that they were somehow related (striking resemblance). Not a fan of the marca, I'm sure that there are some folks that still love their cigars though, cigars are after all, a personal journey!
