HarveyBoulevard
All this talk of discontinued sticks/marcas, confirmed or rumored, has me wondering what and why people may 'go deep' on a cigar. For that matter, it has me wondering what other people's definition of 'going deep' is. So, what makes you go deep on cigar? Ever go deep without having tried a specific cigar? Do you wait until a discontinuation is announced or are you trying to beat the rush? Do you go deep hoping prices go up for a potential sale in the future? What cigars have you gone deep on and are currently sitting on? How many boxes do you consider going deep?
AlBaron
By no means am I an expert on this topic, being a complete noob, but I don't think cigars could be any different than anything else. Once you find something that you really like / just plain works for you - I think it's simply human nature to stock up. Add to this a very common concept of "things are not made as well as they used to be..." - and you have your answer. I can provide a personal example: About 7-8 years ago I got into the wet-shaving routine and using safety razors with DE blades. One of the things people talked about was how good some of the older razor blades where, specifically Swedish Gillettes and British Wilkinsons. Both out of production since seventies / early eighties. Both considered the absolute best. I had a few samples of both, really liked them both. so I went ahead and literally bought EVERY SINGLE British Wilkinson I could find (I think I ended up with close to 1000 blades), and never did that with Swedes... Since then I've tried everything else that's out there. In my personal opinion, nothing really comes close... I've literally spent time calculating how old I will be when I run out of the Brits... There is your answer
Puros Y Vino
Go deep on what you like first and foremost. Don't speculate on what Habanos might axe in the near future. Sometimes the two notions collide mind you. But follow your personal tastes above all. I myself, went deep on a variety of cigar I enjoy (deep being 3-5 boxes). Geo17pip
Interesting topic. Im curious to see everyones responses. I like to have veriety but there are staples that I have in my humi and stick to them. As for going deep, I havent gone deep on anything yet because I am still exploring (even though Ive been smoking Habanos for aound 10 years) So once I find a stck that I really really like then ill go deep. As of now im thinking HU Connie 1 and RAS. A bunch others too but I have no room! hahah My problem is that I like too many cigars that i cant go deep on all of them due to money.

alloy
I have two boxes of Monte 520El's I'm sitting on. Is that deep or just medium? Otherwise, I smoke them as they come in. Although I have two boxes of Partagas Selccion Privada EL 2014 coming in from our host and may just sit on them. Well, maybe one box.
DoubleDD
Deep to me is 5+ boxes. I don't go deep on anything really. I will buy multiple boxes of something I like that is being discontinued such as Dip 4 and 5 and more recently QdO Imperiales.
HarveyBoulevard
Great responses so far. This is more a topic for general discussion than looking for an answer. I have boxes I am deep on (4-5) and do it on smokes I have enjoyed and want to make sure I can enjoy in the future. I have gone deep on boxes after having only smoked 1 so only the future will tell but I have a hunch it will work out. Call it a curiosity post... Guybrush
Cigars are changing over the years. A cigar you like now could become boring in 5-10 years. Thats a thing to keep in mind.
Lotusguy
I go wide rather than deep. I rarely have more than two boxes of anything (exception would be some stuff that comes only in 10er boxes like RA Superiores or Upmann Royal Robusto where I may have 4). I never bought more than one box of anything without trying at least one first.

True, plus I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed their preferences change over the years often due to trying something new. This is the reason I would hesitate to go deep on any one cigar. I guess when you're overstocked you can always trade them
Napa_Smokes
It's rare for me to go deep. I did it with PL Magnificos and ED 109's back in 2007. Had a family medical emergency which caused me to sell them as well as the rest of my collection. As these were two of my favorites back then , when I started looking into rebuilding a collection to smoke they had skyrocketed in value I realized I'd probably never be able to get any more.. So Now I am slowly rebuilding the collection and mainly keep one or two boxes if I am lucky of the differ Marcas and Vitolas that I enjoy and stay away from RE's and LE's for the most part. Still have a long way to go before I start stockpiling and go deep. When it is time I'll probably go deep on some of my favorites that are in my regular rotation. TheLiquidGator
PLPC because I smoke them so often. Aged and young, enjoy them both. Four cabs and will buy another in a few months.
cigaraholic
I've never bought a box of cigars for resale, I hope to smoke everyone I have........so I'll live at least 200 years. For me, deep is at least 4 boxes....aka 100 cigars. I'll just list my 4 deepest. Siglo III.....love the size and they seem to be the "bargin" Cohiba as I can usually pick them up for almost the same price as the II. Sir Winston.....makes me feel like a millionaire when I smoke one. PL Encantos.....could start everyday with one of these. R&J Cazadoros.....that's where all the cherries have been hiding.
SofaKing
I went deep on RA Superiores...6 boxes to be exact. Bear in mind they are 10 counts so 60 sticks hardly constitutes a lot compared to buying 6 boxes of 25. As other touched on, if you find a favorite that smokes well now with a definite future with mid to long term aging, go deep with 5 more.
finecigar
I also tend to go wide rather than deep. Though I can't afford to truly go "deep" on some of my favorites there are a few to list that I always like to keep atleast 100 sticks. I normally don't resell anything either so what I have is what's up for grabs and I also don't smoke as much during the winter months. So max I probably smoke a year is not as much as most here. Some of my "deep" favorites that I have a considerable amount of: LGC No2 SP Belicosos Trinidad Fundadores Trinidad Reyes Cohiba Siglo II QdO Coronas ERdM DT PL Robusto 07 (well no more buying now) PL Montecarlo HdM Churchill anything Bolivar
dvickery
Deep is relative ... I don't believe I am hoarding ... Over the years I have smoked ( probably ) 10 cabs of boli pc's . Boli pc's ... 8 or 10 cabs and 4or 6 dress boxes . Parti shorts .. 8 or so cabs and 4 or 5 dress boxes . Plpc's ... 7 or 8 or 9 cabs . santela
Compared to most guys here I'm not deep on anything. I usually don't buy a second box until I've smoked all my stock. With that said I do have a couple boxes of Monte2 and PLPC stored away.
Ginseng
R&J Cazadoros.....that's where all the cherries have been hiding. Right there with you. Homebrew
I go deep, on the cigars I smoke on a regular basis. If word is out that a cigar, that I love, is to be discontinued, I go very deep. For example, when Bolivar CE, my favorite cigar ever, was being discontinued, in the 50 count CABs, I bought 10 cabs. When they were to be discontinued, in the 25s, I didn't, because I prefer the CABs, and had 10 CABs. When the Bolivar PC, was to be discontinued, in 50 count CABs, I bought 10 CABs. THEY BETTER NOT DISCONTINUE BOLIVAR PCs, or I will make it my mission to kill, every member of the board at habanos.. But Bolivar, is my favorite Marque. That said, I have gone deep on other favorites as well. Punch coronas, Partagas coronas, and RASS, come to mind. Dave (A.K.A. Homebrew) P.S. Just kidding on the killing of the Habanos board members. I think.
