Such a pretty bottle :) I just picked up some Hirsch and Four Roses single barrel from the same store - on a mission to try some good bourbon.

Nice Claus. Kinda picked it up because they only had 1 bottle left...thought it must be good if there's only one left lol. I might go back tomorrow though and exchange for a bottle of Whistle Pig. Only $20 more.

I'm not a fan of the Willet Pot Still. I'd save a bunch of money and buy Johnny Drum Private Stock. They are both botteled by KBD otherwise known as Willet Distillery. They however are not a distiller, at least not until they started distilling two years ago. So it is all a blend by a NDP. The Juice in Johnny Drum PS is very similar to the old Black Maple Hill SB, which was also a KBD bottled product. I also would drink Noah's Mill and Rowans Creek over the WPSR but that's just my opinion. It is a great looking bottle though.

At this store, Johnny Drum Private Stock is only $5 less than the Willet... And you have to order it from the Hollywood branch. :(

Dangolf18,

As fokker4me pointed out (and this cannot be overstated) Willet is basically NDP juice. Why would a distillery sell their best stuff to someone else to name it something else? May I humbly suggest the following (though I am not sure where you live so I do not know their availability to you). Under $30:

1) Elmer T Lee--my personal favorite

2) Buffalo Trace-just straight forward good value for your money bourbon. Excellent quality for the price.

3) Heaven Hill aged stated 6 year old 90 proof or 100 proof- two of the best values in bourbon anywhere.

4) Elijah Craig 12 year - see Heaven Hill description.

5) Evan Williams single barrel (86 proof so just a dash of water works for me)

6) Four Roses Small Batch ( if you want a kick in strength and slight increase in price try the single barrel 100 proof)

7) Old Grand Dad 100 (or 114 proof if you can find it)..though you need to like a spicy rye note in your bourbon..if you do this will be the best bourbon you will ever drink (unless you like a sweeter wheat type bourbon)

8) Heavin BiB 100 proof (usually about $14 U.S.)..solid juice for the money.

Additional thoughts:

* try using distilled water or distilled ice with the bourbon..tap water/ice has impurities.

*As for Ginger Ale ( I do like my bourbon at times with Ginger Ale ). There IS a difference in my opinion. I prefer Schweppes as I find Canada Dry to be a bit bitter.

*There is no "perfect" way to drink bourbon..on ice, neat or with a mixer (ie. cola or ginger ale or whatever). I just prefer mine with club soda, Schweppes or with distilled "blue water" ice at home. When out on the town I take what I can get.

** I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH-- higher price DOES NOT equal better quality. What I listed above is just the tip of the "ice berg". What is has been happening/ is happening with bourbon boom is very similar to the cigar boom of the late 1990's. Pappy Van Winkle at $70 for the 15 yr old was an "ok" deal.. at $200+ it is a damn joke!

All the best,

CM

Reviewing my post It looks like I'm "shilling" for Heaven Hil products.. I suppose I do love their juice; however that is not an all encompassing list- my all time favorite comes from Buffalo Trace. Beam has some nice products and I am excited for the future as they were bought by Suntory. Stepping up in price (if you are interested) you should consider Russells Reserve or Bookers (depending on your tolerance for alcohol punch they may need a splash of water or ice).

If you like a sweeter "wheater" bourbon I would steer you to the W L Weller (more so than Makers Mark-just my opinion). The 12 year old or even the W L Weller Special Reserve (both are hard to find here in VA)

A final rambling note-- if you see it Very Old Barton **aged stated** (it will say aged 6 years and not just the number "6") BUY IT! Barton Brands- who I believe is owned by the Buffalo Trace folks- has been screwing around the last 12-18 months and dumped the age statement on this bourbon so they can use younger juice in it. This used to be THE BEST value in bourbon..as just like Scotch the age on the bottle is always the youngest bourbon in it. So you were getting bourbon aged 6-10 years for FREAKING $15!! here in A before they realized a "boom" was happening decided to cash in by removing the age statement to use younger whiskey. Regardless of proof if you run across any that actually says "Aged 6 Years" buy all that you can find...

Sorry to ramble..

I don't like Willett pot still. It has a funk that reminds me of wet ropes on a ship. I will not buy a bottle ever again.

Still haven't been able to source Black Maple Hill.

I'll second your suggestion of Noah's Mill and Rowan's Creek.

Also worth trying is Corner Creek. Nice drinkable wheater from the same place as Noah and Rowan.

Black Maple Hill is available on the secondary market at $300-500. I don't think you will find a bottle at a shop for less.

What a bummer.

Eh, whatever. Plenty of good juice out there without me funneling money into the hands of gougers.

To think that two buddies and me killed a bottle in one night a few months ago because he had it "sitting around"... we didn't know it was that valuable. Tasty stuff, btw.

No point in having good whiskey unless you drink it.

I love the Willett Reserve, it is one of my daily sippers! Around these parts you can get it for around $30.00.-$32.00. It will often go on sale for $28.00 or so.
