To me it tastes like "hospital" with a bit of added "overfilled cigarette ashtray".

I'm guessing a connoisseur would say iodine and peat smoke but I thought it was just plain disgusting.

You're alone bro LOL

I think I had some last night. The current batch appears to be sweeter than I can recall - almost like the Uigeadail or Ardbog. Very nice. Maybe it was an Uigeadail or Ardbog, can't really recall now

More for me.

I must say, that iodine aroma is exactly what attracts me to a Islay Scotch... Not many things like it but just fits my palate :)

Islay isn't for everyone. It took me years before I saw anything in peated whiskey, reminded me of out of date cough medicine as a younger lad. Try the Caol Ila 12 if you want a stepping stone into peated whisky. I have a bottle open that I often reach for instead of many heavier examples. "Lighter bodied than many Islay malts, yet with all their typical peatiness".

Will give the Caol Isla a shot. I like the mild smokiness of say, Highland Park, but just couldn't get over the pongy medicinal character of the Ardbeg.

I have to agree that the 'peat' flavour has to appeal to you. You can get used it over time. I notice people who like 'peatiness' also gravitate towards Laphroaig.

My work colleagues were wretching at the smell of it when I was drinking it in a bar over christmas. So your not alone, however none of them are whiskey drinkers. I love the stuff personally.

all islays are peaty

Bruichladdich most definitely is not.

I saw it at a bar last month where the bartender pours a good drink. Was really looking forward to this but it wasn't to my liking. That said I was in good spirits after that.

I'm a fan, but I know a lot of people who aren't into peat.

Talisker distillers edition is what changed it for me... maybe you'll have a similar moment with some other Islay.

I find a lot of what attracts me to Ardbeg 10 is the clean flavours delivered without huge tannin or or acidity. It's just beautifully made and matured spirit, that is very consistent between bottlings and batches. It's an Islay that can be had any time of day. Laphroaig quarter cask is also brilliant.

Lagavulin 16 or Laphroaig 10 on the other hand are after dinner / evening drinks IMO. They're much more viscous and have a thicker mouth feel; almost like dessert.

I found it 'challenging' let's say at first but soon liked it to the point that now I find non smokey whiskies a bit bland. Islays for me!

See Talisker is what I can't get on with! To me that is all medicine just overpoweringly so. We have an ointment in the UK called Germoline basically an anticeptic cream. It's like that mixed with vodka to me!

No, I'm not a fan either. Way too peaty and smokey.

I found the normal Talksker to be very iodine-y. The distillers edition was like eating creme brule then getting a big waft of oaken campfire on the nose.

I'm with you. Lagavulin 16 certainly seems out of place for noon on a sunny day (which is when I go for a gin and tonic). But if it's cold out, or any time near sundown or past, this is my go to bottle. I absolutely love the stuff.
