Ginseng Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I recently was given a bottle of Glenfiddich Special Reserve NAS by a non-drinker who received it as a gift. I love free booze as much as the next guy. I tried it on three separate occasions and found it to be insipid and not worth drinking. To me, it was the Red White and Blue of Scotch Whisky. I poured the remainder down the drain and gave the triangluar bottle to my wife for crafting. That's how I felt about it. Anyone else have a different experience with this particular "Scotch?" Wilkey
free85 Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I haven't had the special reserve but I find the GlenFiddich to be a little too sharp for my tastes (and I REALLY enjoy Islay scotches). What did it taste like (other than swill)? Hate to pick at the wound... But I'm curious.
Ginseng Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 Well, it was shallow, a bit medicinal. Very short finish, vanishing. Leaving nothing on the palate. Really pretty devoid of any interesting aromas or flavors. It was really not notable. I followed directly with some Elijah Craig and though a different liquor, the contrast couldn't have been more stark. Wilkey
sengjc Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Haven't tried this one before and first time hearing it. Is it a Duty Free Retail Only?
Ginseng Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 This one was duty free. I haven't looked for it at the locak liquor store. Will check next time I'm shopping. Wilkey

Guest rob Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 I don't think that would be it, Seng. Wilkey said in the OP that it's a NAS. Wilks, maybe it was a tainted bottle? Perhaps stored poorly?
Ginseng Posted January 28, 2015 Author Posted January 28, 2015 That's right, the NAS. I can't attest to storage prior to receiving it but storage while in their possession was in a cool corner of the formal dining room so it didn't see much heat or light. I'm not sure I know what "bad" scotch tastes like. Wilkey

gigabyte056 Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 I had this one a while back, the NAS one was travel retail when I bought it. It wasn't as bad as you describe it but I really didn't find it worth the price. It had no special tastes, a very simple whisky wrapped in a nice bottle and with a good name, just peat, smoke and a hint of sweet fruit. FYI , it cost back then about 70 GBP so really not worth it.
