RickHendeson Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Hello. I just smoked my first Partagas Serie D #4, and I was really surprised based on what I had read from prior reviews. This cigar had an extremely marked perfumey/flowery/soapy taste.Don't get me wrong, I understand that everyone's sense of taste is different. And also don't get me wrong -- I really enjoyed the taste, actually. So much so, that I would consider a box.But before I plunk down a fair bit of $ on a box, I'm wondering if anyone else has had this profile with this cigar? Don't want to spend on what might have been a fluke . . .
... Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Hi there! The subject has been covered already if my memory is correct (can be searched) and yes, many have had the flowery aroma to a D4. I personally have had it to different degrees but in my experience, it is not the commonest profile to this cigar. I'd suggest trying a few others from different boxes to make your mind on the average profile. Best of luck and cheers!
Reevzy Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I've never had that with a D4 but I know what you mean with the soapy flavour, I get that with the Monte 520's. Not a fan, almost as if they've been dropped in a sink full of dish washing liquid
forgop Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I've never given much thought of narrowing down specific flavors in a cigar. I prefer to have a clear mind and not think too much in the process. At the end of the day, I don't care if the flavors are cedar, grass, or chocolate. I just know whether I like it and when I do, I smoke more of them. 3
Guybrush Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 This soapy taste occurs in several Cuban cigars sometimes. I hate this flavour in a cigar and to me it is a defect like a wine fault. 2
santela Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I find soapy to be common among under filled cigars, and I definitely consider it to be a fault. I would try a few more singles before going for the box.
madandana Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Never even close in a PSD4 but I get that consistently in my box of Choix Supreme. I smoke one every 6 months hoping it will go away but it doesn't. Real soapy.
Cisco Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Like Guybrush I view soapy tastes as a fault with the cigar and does not represent its true flavor profile. I do not typically find soapy or perfumy flavors with the D4s.
garbandz Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Never judge a brand by one cigar.......or one box.........................that soapy flavor is unusual but it happens.I consider it a fault, but it has only happened to me 2 or 3 times in 25 years.
Habanos2000 Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Can't say that I've found my PSD4's flowery but have had bad experiences with some Punch PC's being 'soapy'. Honestly just like the childhood punishment of biting a bar of soap to wash a dirty mouth. It came on particularly strong and sudden and I couldn't for the life of me try to work past it, had to ditch the cigar. Others from the same box were fine. Always found that flavor profile unexplainable for tobacco.
ImTripN2 Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Big difference between "floral" and "soapy". I get it too, but rarely... maybe 1 in a 100 and the vitola, or marca seems to make no difference. Personally, I think it is hand lotion.
str8dog Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Been a while since I posted on FoH, but no better place than to jump in here. Think rosewater and you'll get the soapy/floral profile. A little old lady at our church used to make rosewater cookies and that's exactly what the taste was. My only experience with RoyRobs was from a box I bought like this and couldn't figure out why everyone else loved theirs so much. Maybe not what the OP was referring to, but that's what I experienced.
Habana Mike Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I've detected a soapy taste on a few rare occasions. Here's an excerpt from an earlier post: From cursory research I've done it seems certain naturally occurring phenols in tobacco, particularly carbolic acid, can have a decided influence on the potential for a soapy taste to be detected. Carbolic acid is used in many soaps. .... Some individuals are more prone than others in detecting the particular chemical compounds that contribute to the flavors or sensations found while enjoying a particular cigar, and this certainly gives merit to the duration and conditions surrounding the aging of cigars as the chemical compounds change over time. .... On another note, cilantro has also been described as having a soapy taste. Apparently it is aldehydes that cause the soapy sensation in cilantro/coriander. Interstingly, aldehydes are also present in tobacco.
mk05 Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 (edited) Partagas D4 is a very perfumy smoke. Very much so that it can be confusing. I don't see anything wrong with your experience. EDIT: soapy thing is specific and I've only experienced it only several times as well - very off putting. Edited January 14, 2015 by mk05
Smallclub Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Personally, I think it is hand lotion. No way. That makes no sense: the soapy taste occured already, and more often than now, at a time when toiletry products were non-existent in Cuba.
ImTripN2 Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 No way. That makes no sense: the soapy taste occured already, and more often than now, at a time when toiletry products were non-existent in Cuba. Ya, you could be right. I know that toiletries are in short supply in Cuba, but skin lotion or hand soap is not totally unheard of either. I have smoked several cigars over the years that had that taste, some so strong I pitched the cigar immediately, and some so mild that I just toughed it out. I guess anything is possible, but it is such a random occurrence, and I'm pretty sure what I've tasted and what the OP describes is not a natural byproduct of tobacco or fermentation, so it has to come from somewhere. A torceadora rolls a lot of cigars in a day, and that's gotta be tough on the skin.... hence my theory.
earthson Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Haven't come across it, but it sounds poopy! Now, floral, on the other hand, is a note I love to find!
CaptainQuintero Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 If its what I'm thinking of, I get it once a year or so, in fact maybe once a couple of years. I've been led to believe it's badly fermented tobacco.
headstand Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 If its what I'm thinking of, I get it once a year or so, in fact maybe once a couple of years. I've been led to believe it's badly fermented tobacco. That was my understanding as well, and seems to fit with the infrequent occurrence. Imagine a roller working with a bad batch of tobacco; the cigars from that batch are not boxed together, rather they are sorted by colour from a larger sampling of cigars rolled in the factory. In that scenario you would only occasionally run into soapy tasting cigars. For me, once for sure, maybe twice in five years.
RockemSockem Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 I'm detecting that soapy flavour on a P2 (ULA JUN 14) right now. Tastes like licking the gum on an envelope. I seem to get that more frequent than others that have posted here. Maybe a couple times a year. So disappointing.
greyhulk Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 I had a couple of rascc with the perfume taste but half way through disappeared..
