cigarbreak
Planning to go with our host for the first time and need some guidance in terms of flavour/complexity bang for your buck. I’ve looked around in threads and have found some info on DC’s and Churchill’s but I specifically would like see the opinion of many and form my decision from there, on what is smoking well now. Looking to get one box of DC’s and one box of Churchill’s and the following are my choices. I have tried and have Punch DC’s (love them) so I have not included it and the 50 cab SLR DC’s are not in my budget. I have already tried the HdM and the SLR and I equally love both as well. I have not tried the others. Would love to hear which of each you would get or if you would rather get 2 from the Churchill’s and not the DC’s or vice versa. Thanks for your input in advance. tjohn7
Can't go wrong with HdM DC or Sir Winnie. As good as it gets!
Puros Y Vino
IMO. Double Coronas: I love the Punch DC and Partagas Lusitania. RAG's just don't do it for me. Haven't had one that jumped out at me. BCG's are pretty good. Haven't had enough. SLR DC's are at the bottom of my list. Great nose pre-light, but bland once lit. Churchills: Esplendido is King. Sir Winnies are the runner up. QdO's are the most unique of the three. Highly underrated. Give an RyJ a try. They can be excellent or banal depending on the year/release.
...
The Lusis I have had were quite good so I would recommend them. Enjoy Punch, Hoyo and SLR DCs as well, each showing something special... Own a few but haven't tried any churchills yet.
cpmurrin
party lusi's are great at the moment. personally really like the vr don alejandros if you can find a decent box
earthson
From your list, the RA Gigantes and HU SW are my clear choices. The RAG do need some time to settle - treat them as you would RASS and you will not be disappointed. I find them even better than RASS if you have the time to enjoy them unhurried. The HUSW is tobacco perfection (and I've heard the new releases are pretty good ROTT).
Lant63
My top three cigars of this year are H Upmann Sir Winston, cohiba esplendido, and Bolivar Corona Gigantes. Punch DC is the best one I have had this year beating lusitania. With that said I would pass on any dc and go with esplendido and sir Winnies instead. Recent esplendido are the best cohiba I have ever smoked. The would be my cigar of the year, but I haven't had enough of them. PapaDisco
Rob's Sir Winnies are truly awesome ROTT. Me and the boys have already killed one box and I'm trying to slow things down on the other 3 but they don't look long for this world. I also concur on the Punch DC's and the Lusitanias. Both excellent although I think the Punch edges the Lusi, but I'm happy to have both in my humi and rotate through them. I've enjoyed the Boli gigantes; to me they're not as rich as the Punch, they're more of a summertime palate of flavors. Loved them and plan to get more. If you're stocked up on Punch DC's, then I'd go double on an order of Sir Winstons.
CigarB
HdM DC would be my first choice.
BradNC
Recent Lusitania and Sir Winston's would be my vote. Both are outstanding and completely different profiles.
cigarbreak
Thanks for your thoughts. I was originally set on the SW and QdO but read much praise on the BCG and fondly remember the one HdM DC I tried so i became on the fence about the Imperiales. The Lusitanias however just have his mysterious appeal as a powerful but finessed cigar. Whatever I decide on though i'm sure i won't be dissapointed...Ideally though i'd want the second choice to be rich and on the med-full flavour and body side relative to the SW. ramon_cojones
I've always hated lusis ask anybody, however this late 13 box I have is great. I'd have to give the nod to the rags though since my buddy's '12 box was stupendous and recent ones i've witness look absolutely delicious. Not much of a hoyo dc guy but will probably try a box. In terms of churchills well I don't like any modern boli so I'd give the nod to esplendidos which are the best imo, then probably the imperiales since the winnies I've tried need time despite the quality tobacco. Carts
For DC's id say the Lusi or the RAG, they're the two I like best For the churchill I'd go with Esplendidos, heavy price tag but there's a reason they're so heavily raved about. On your list though, SW, never smoked, just based on what I've read on '14 boxes
avaldes
Since you are smoking them young, I would eliminate the Lusitania and RAG. Both need some time to develop into great cigars. Sir Winston is a good choice, as is Esplendido but the cost on the latter can be prohibitive. Boli CG can be hit and miss. In it's prime a Boli CG is a flavor bomb and can be a lot of cigar for a relatively new smoker. Punch DC can be a good choice if you like the Punch flavor profile. I don't but LOTS of people do...plus they smoke well young. Hoyo DC smokes very well young and if you like the flavor profile, that can be a very good box of cigars. They are too lite for a lot of seasoned smokers, but again, if you like the taste they are pretty consistent. QdO Imperiales are a great choice, but frankly this is a bit of a niche cigar and the flavor profile isn't for everyone. If I were you, I'd buy a box of SW and a small sampler of DC's and other churchills to figure out what you like. You know you like Hoyo DC's so that is also a safe choice. joeypots
Hoyo DC made me a believer in Cuban Cigars. They used to be great young. For me, the others need at least a little box time . BCG is my favorite churchill but like a lot of Bolivars I find they need to be laid down for a five year nap. If Rob says the R&J Churchill is on young and you don't want to lay the cigars down, I'd jump on them.
