Colt45 Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 I certainly understand all of the above perspectives - if I may add.... If one takes the time and expends the effort to do the research, take the photographs, digitize as necessary, pay for paper, printing, publishing, blah blah blah, etc...... Time and effort are worth something. I have any number of art books - innumerable books of all kinds - they're not produced by magic out of thin air.......
Ginseng Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 I just found a used copy of this book on Amazon for $9.99 including shipping. If the condition is good, that's a must buy. Wilkey
oliverdst Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 To say that the MRN's book is not worth the money is as say that it's not worth to pay to pay big bucks for a cigar. If you can find and afford it buy it.
PigFish Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 (edited) If the condition is good, that's a must buy. Wilkey Wilkey's advice is always to be considered strongly.... I found one of the books that he recommended on eBay, it cost me about $25 bucks with shipping so I bought it; $25 seemed reasonable. As Ross said, the effort, expertise and the reference material is in fact worth something. Put a value on it and if you and a seller can agree on a price then you'll enjoy the book. My comment about it, like many things cigars is a personal value perspective. The book is not a gateway to a pot of gold. If you know someone that has one take a look at it before you set a value on it. The reference material is out there and due to people like Trevor it is free! I say, don't feel compelled by the collector mindset to consider it a 'must own at any price.' Of course, I am not often swayed by the collector mindset and you may have motivations quite different from my own. Most people do... -LOL ... Edit, I have to credit Mike too here! Kinda' got 'the last post' short term memory thing going... -LOL Too many ELs in my youth I guess! -Piggy Edited December 5, 2014 by PigFish
Ryn165 Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 If i recall, I paid less than $100 for my first edition. I've only opened it less than 5 times. If used are now selling for $700 and mint in excess of $2,000, not a bad investment. I can't even imagine what it'll be worth when the US lifts the embargo, and Americans try to get their hands on this collectible.
canadianbeaver Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 This book is not to hard to find online for under $300. A little patience and perseverance is all it takes. At one time I actually ended up with two of them, so I sold one to a friend.

It was not printed or published in Cuba. And it is EASILY found for less than 700. As mentioned above, it just takes patience.

As mentioned above, it just takes patience. I'd question the 'EASILY' part. The ones I quoted are the only ones currently posted for sale that I could find. As I mentioned, they can be had for less if one is lucky, I imagine patience helps..

As I mentioned, they can be had for less if one is lucky, I imagine patience helps.. 3 weeks ago on Amazon there were two for under $500. About 3 or 4 months ago, there was one on eBay for $500. Yes patience helps, but the prices right now are insane.
shlomo Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 One on eBAY right now for 450 euro...about 560 USD. Still a crazy price imo.

shlomo Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 About 7 or 8 years ago, I was offered one for 125 cdn. I passed thinking that it was too much money for a book.... plus I didn't have that coin back then. Wish I would have bought it, but not so sure how useful it would have been.
Colt45 Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 The book is not a gateway to a pot of gold. I agree with your thoughts in this regard - I imagine that it might be easy to take what one might read (anywhere) on the topic as gospel. My take is a bit broad and simplistic. First, when things go out of print / become discontinued, prices tend to go up, which I guess becomes a matter of supply and demand. As for the book itself (which I do not own), even stripping away the subjective content, by most counts it is considered a great resource. That it recounts discontinued / long gone cigars might make it more so - a history book of sorts - not unlike a book of automobiles no longer produced, etc. As to value (again in the broad sense), I imagine you've probably spent countless hours and perhaps dollars developing your humidor system. Your time and effort are worth something. Our host spends considerable time and effort selecting and rejecting cigars for his clients. Some view it as a worthwhile service, others as a type of gimmick. The time and effort are worth something. The Cuban CIgar Website - what started as something to do for fun has become something much bigger. The information is provided freely (some of it I believe, coming from MRN), but the time and effort are surely worth something. For my part, I love books and usually don't mind paying for the information they provide, and the general pleasure they can sometimes bring. 1
Frinkiac7 Posted June 9, 2016 Posted June 9, 2016 I have the chance to snag what I'm told is a good-condition copy of the Spanish edition for USD 118. I can read Spanish so no issues there. I'm in the U.S. so don't have a reasonable chance of grabbing it at the CUC price. Pull the trigger? Tempting at this price. 1

That is a reasonable price. Bonus that you can read Espanol too.
Lant63 Posted June 9, 2016 Posted June 9, 2016 I think my parents paid 250 for my english version. I love it. A lot of great info in it. So if Spanish is not a problem then get it.

Note: I am not in the market for the new release. I sincerely wish him all the best with it when it is put to market in its finality. 3000 hours...5000 hours...10000 hours+ of work? Who am I to criticise? I couldn't even begin to fathom such an enterprise.
