So if you were just starting out, and there are some on here who are, what are the ten cigars (or boxes) you MUST have in the humidor to feel as if you have a respectable collection?

Posted

I'm no expert and have lurked here for years, but just recently started to switch most of my buying power to FOH and here's what I have OVERspent my money on:

1. Montecristo No. 2 (2 boxes) (HQ or above)

2. Montecristo No. 4

3. H Upmann Mag 46

4. HdM Epicure No. 2

5. Partagas Short

6. RASCC

7. Party Lusi's

8. Partagas D No4

I've also got samplers for Cohiba Pyramide Extra, Dip 2's and Winston Churchill's.

But I tried my best to diversify size from the minutos to the pyramide to the monster Lusi's. (Wish I would have bought a box of the Winston's)

For me it would be these but realize it is based on my tastes and 10 is far too few. No point in amassing cigars that would impress me, it's your tastes that are important. With that being said these would be my first ten must haves if I were starting out again:

rass

rascc

rag

psd4

presidentes

mdo2

shorts

cce

esplendidos

husw

I would expect a normal person to have:

mc2

mc4

psd4

rass

shorts

epi 2

coro

sig vi

bbf

mag 46

Oh man, so many nice cigars to sample. Do you already know what you like or would you assemble a collection for showing off?

Are you still experimenting, willing to go with any vitola, have budgetary limits?

All regular production cigars can be suggested here but without overthinking it, I would suggest:

Partagas Lusi

Montecristo No2

Hoyo Epicure 2

Cohiba Robusto

RASS

PL Montecarlos

Bolivar PC

Punch Punch

SLR DC

Partagas 898

Quoting SC and the top-it-all-off threads: "Given enough time, every single cigar in HSA's arsenal will be mentioned".

Of course... some more than others. There's no doubt that Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 wll be mentioned more times than Romeo y Julieta Belicoso. One might as well just put up a poll on HSA's entire inventory and have people vote on which one they think is best.

1. Party shorts

3. Pl montecarlo

4. Jl nr 2

5. Boli pc

6. Hdm nr 2 (perfect to give to new smokers )

7. Hu mag 46

8. Some montecristo

9. A double corona; lusitania or RA grande

10. Romeo and julietta of some sort - Churchill perhaps

Man, you guys are making me so jealous right now... I have no CCs in there right now. Victim of a beetle so freezing current stock and I have 13 boxes coming in that are not here yet.frown.gif You guys have some awesome stock! Enjoy!

Well, I don't consider 10 cigars "well stocked". I need significantly more than that. Hell, I can smoke 10 in any given good week!

I think of well-stocked as a set of golf clubs. Not every situation needs a 3 wood. Having a well stocked humidor to me requires:

(for my personal selection I'll use parenthesis)

Something good in the morning (Por Larrañaga Monte Carlos).

Something good after a heavy meal (Bolivar Royal Coronas).

Something slightly out of your budget range for special occasions (Cohiba Lanceros).

Something cheap for an everyday smoke (Rafael Gonzalez Panetelas Extra).

Something short for time constraints (Partagas Shorts).

Something long for a long afternoon (H. Upmann Sir Winston, which I need to restock).

Something as a change of pace from your go to, that is a different flavor than you normally smoke (Saint Luis Rey Regios).

Something versatile that can replace one or more of these situations, in case you are feeling like something different than what is normal for that situation(Por Larrañaga Petit Coronas) .

This is one of the best ways to think of things that I have seen in a long long time....

Great post

For me it would be

Mornings...QdO Corona or Epi #1

Heavy Meal....RASS

Out of budget....regional relase

Cheap everyday...I smoke a Jose Peidra everyday as it is

TIme contraints...RASSC or BCjr

Long Afternoon....HdM DC or VR DA

Change of pace...wow I try to be all over the map

Versatile...Rafeal or Sancho

Again as others have said 10 boxes is only 250 stifcks....a goodly amount to newbies and drastically understocked to many here....so if I really only had that much coin I would put it toward box splits or samplers from our Host so as to build up a variety and start figuring out my own thoughts on the above concept.

The Prez has put together a great sampler for newbies. You could try a bunch of cigars and then fill your humi with cigars you like. If it has several boxes that you enjoy and some that are for aging, then I would say that is a great start. It would be silly for you to have a humi filled with smokes that I like and you cannot enjoy.

For me it would be the 10 cigars I've already smoked and liked the most. I think the respectable part of a collection has to come from the owner

Great advice. I've still got boxes that I thought were a good pick up on recommendations that I just don't enjoy.

That's why I'm still holding to the box buying :) I want to make sure I really like the marca/vitola I'm buying the box from.

Btw gents I was not looking for ideas to fill my humidor or start my collection. I have a pretty good stash built up and more on the way from Prez :-), but was interested in opinions from others on what they feel are staples for the humi. Sticks that I think are must haves might be very different from what others think and I always like to know what others really enjoy lighting up and why. Let's keep it going! Cheers!

I'd think of it in terms of vitola, and then get those in marcas you enjoy.

Two different robustos, and two different petite coronas; since these are easy for your inexperienced friends to enjoy. Best bets would be PSD4 and Epi 2, Monte 4 (your pals will recognize it) and JFK's H Upmann PC (comes with a story and is tasty).

One or two boxes of corona gorda: Punch Punch is my favorite, but strong for some. Cohiba Siglo IV is consistent but expensive.

A couple boxes of Churchills of course: R&J, H Upmann Sir Winstons, HdM, Punch maybe.

A box of something prominente: the recent Punch DC's have been awesome, so have the Partagas Lusitanias and the HdM DC's.

Since you're talking about a new collection, I'd also get a box or two of PCC aged stock. Keep in mind that one box of aged cigars will be the cost of two current production boxes. You can also get lucky finding 4-5 year old boxes in B&M stores if you're fortunate enough to have any of those around, and those can replace the decade old boxes that Rob can find you from the distributor.
