DoubleDD Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Most of my aged stock is from the H&F aging program, some PCC. I'm always hesitant to buy from sources I do not know to have a great track record. Although you trust a source, it is ultimately the tobacco used to make that cigar that is the deciding factor. A cigar can be kept in an ideal environment but if the tobacco used is subpar then the cigar will be subpar.
Laxman Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 I have stayed away from cigars from the 70's and 80's. From what has been told to me time and time again by much wiser and knowledgeable people then me, Storage is Everything. Recently have bought a couple boxes from the 80's from trusted private collectors and the few I have tried have been excellent. Buy at least for me I would rather not roll the dice on storage, as the price tag is high on these boxes, and stick with something I know is smoking well. Plus there were a ton of fakes in the major two brands in the 80's and I probably would not know if what I was smoking was real or not lol. Either way to each his own. Everyone has a comfort level of what they are willing to spend on a cigar or a box. Just because a cigar is old it does not mean that it is going to be great or even good for that matter. Have had some cigars for the 90's that were pooped out and flavorless, could have due to bad storage or many variables.
liuzzi Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 As is being already said, buying vintage cigars is more or less lottery (more if you don't know the storage history, less if you do and can inspect the box prior to buying). The oldest cigars I've smoked have been from the beginning of eighties, few have been some of the best smoking experiences in my life, others have been simply very good and others disappointing. As I don't smoke much I personally don't mind paying occasionally over the odds for a box when chances are good the box might be stellar and price is not out of this world.
