MashTea Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 So I just finished my first BBF and thought with the draw going on this would be a good time to do my first ever review as well. (Bare with me and my unrefined pallet haha) It's a cold night so I decided to pair this beauty of a cigar with some gingerbread tea (with plenty of brandy and a little bit of cream). *apologies for picture quality* Construction & cold draw: Overall a great looking cigar. Nice dark wrapper, with some minor cracks in the foot. Though there was some "wrinkling" about the mid way point in cigar. Great aroma of tobacco, a spicy/peppery earthiness, dried prune (especially at the foot), some gingerbread (though I think this had more to do with the tea I just made hah) It felt really tightly packed & I was worried it was going to be difficult draw. After I cut & took my cold draw, my fears were laid to rest. Great draw, taste of tobacco, fungus & earth (like fresh picked truffles/mushooms). A nice salty taste left on the lips, reminiscent of the ocean (seriously guys I'm not trying to be pretentious). Lighting & first third: This thing hit me right off the bat. Full bodied, with spicy pepper and cedar notes. As I settled into the first third a bittersweet chocolate flavour became present. Rich smoke, and cedar notes for miles on the retrohale. So far so good. As I was nearing the end of the first third the strength seemed to tapper off to a much more manageable full body. Notes of campfire, and toasted coffee and cocoa. I would honestly be happy if the cigar stayed this way the whole time, but I found out this thing just keeps getting better as you go. Second third: Had a slight canoe going but it fixed itself as I was going through the cigar. At this point it started taking on a rich leather/hide flavour (especially on the retrohale). The spice & pepper were still there but much more restrained. Not much remained of the chocolate/cocoa flavours, but it took on this great tobacco flavour that I have come to expect from Bolivar as I was entering the final third. Last Third: The notes of leather are still there but are loosing out to this beautiful earthy flavour. Body is resting at what could be a toss up between medium-full & full. Rich smoke, peperry tobacco that reminds me of that "English blend taste" of pipe tobaccos. Entering the final bit of the cigar and a flavour of what I can only describe as "chocolate dipped digestive cookie" enters the fray, and hints of burnt molasses. Final thoughts: All in all one of the best cigars I've had in my limited experience. Complex, rich, bold flavours. It felt like I was smoking a different cigar every third, but all working together to form this great whole. I don't have a score to give this per say, but I think it's pretty clear I enjoyed the hell out of this stick. 2
