madandana Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Not sure if I've ever had a custom. Whats the big attraction? What makes Hamlets customs so sought after? Do you throw out the 30 day rest rule with customs? I am looking forward to meeting Hamlet and trying some customs but I was just trying to understand why some of us hold them in such high regard . Who has rolled the custom you enjoyed the most and why?

alloy Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Customs...I've had Hamlets, Monsdales and Alfredo Martinez, are like the best LE's (and even better) I've ever smoked. I really like the 2013 Punch D'oro LE, But the customs above just blow it away in regards to different flavors while smoking.

If you want to do yourself a big service, get yourself some customs next time you're in Cuba (Hamlets, Renaldo's ,Yolanda,Monsdales and Cuetos.ETC.ETC. . In short,any roller at the big Hôtels or elsewhere on the Island ,Get some. I've been to Cuba 4 times and I always brought back ONLY Customs every time I've gone . Why travel 7.500 Miles to get a box of cigars I can get here anytime. Customs are another experience. Guy 2

Imagine the fact that you have nothing to do but sit there for hours, suckling on the glorious teet of the master chocolatier discussing everything from chocolate to his lifestyle. Imagine the amount of love that goes in and you can see them pour it right into your hand. Imagine if that kind of chocolate costs a fraction of the gimmicky chocolate with their 2-3 shiny wrapper. DoubleDD Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 I'm a big Johnny O fan. Some of the customs I've bought from him have tasted better than any factory rolled cigar. It's about personal preference. Customs can be hit or miss. Sample them and enjoy the experience.

I have smoked customs from nearly all the famous rollers, with the exception of Mons, and to my taste even the best ones lack real character. [point simplified on purpose, for explanation] - The mild to medium ones always taste like a declination of the Upmann marca, sometimes going towards Cohiba (at best) or Vegas Robaina (at worse). - The strong ones are often confined to the RyJ and Partagas fields…

Enjoyed a La China Diadema recently, but that was the only La China I had so I cant really comment on her other offerings. Truth be told a master roller is only as good as the tobacco he/she uses. Shitty tobacco + great roller = shitty cigar Shitty roller + great tobacco = good cigar Great tobacco + great roller = glorious cigar 1

Rye Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 A gifted and well aged Crisantos Lancero still holds high placement on my best cigar smoked list. Custom blended Farmies are a staple in my rotation, and thanks to great BOTL, I've been lucky to try many many custom cigars from most of the various rollers. I have yet to try one from Alex, but I'm hearing good things already. If I had a steady source, there wouldn't be any bands in my humidors at all. 2

earthson Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 I've found Johnny Os to be okay. Sometimes great when you want that barnyard kick, and sometimes rolled a little too tight, too loose, or just plain wonky. I'm still unconvinced that they are all Cuban puros - some of them taste awfully Nicaraguan to me. Of course, certain Edicion Limitadas taste Nicaraguan, too, soooo I don't know. I've got some Mondale (jrs) that are a great take on the Montecristo blend, though not quite worth what people sell them for off the island. Have some El Laguito lanceros left, too. Those are kind of nice and grassy and are obviously made with excellent tobacco. Over all, I've found customs to be a little more hit-or-miss than standard production. Plus, the nature of rollers attempting to protect their identity coupled with changing quality among the tobacco used has pretty much made me a Regular Production type of guy. If I'm spending $10 or $12 on a cigar, it's most likely not going to be a custom.

The one thing I have heard is that they need to be smoked with in months of them being rolled or lay them down for a nap

No question about it. For two, when they are in their sick period, they taste wretched. Like putrescent donkey afterbirth wretched. When in doubt, forget about them for a year. I've got some that are just coming out of their sick period (~15 months from roll date), but they're not exactly good, yet. 1
