Rushman Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Ive been shaving or getting my head shaved for about 5 years now. For me, going to the barber shop (which I do 1-2 times per week) is what it must be for the wife when she goes to the spa - only less time and money! In Los Angeles I went to a family barber shop in Lomita twice per week- simply the best service I've ever had. In Houston it was a shop in the seedier side of town where a barber with the largest hands Ive ever seen palmed my head like a basketball - it was a long drive so I mostly shaved my head myself and have the scars to prove it. In Mexico there were two shops I went to that were good but not great. Here in Cayman, there are about 50 barber shops within a one mile radius of my office and 99.99% of them are Jamaican barbers. I go to one down the street, Jamaican of course. He applies Noxema on my head and face after the shave and then wipes it off with a warm wet towel. At first I was thinking to myself "my grandmama used noxema, gross". Now I strangely look forward to the smell. Anybody else love going to the barber shop?
JoeyGunz Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I do, my barber is my friends, always enjoy the experience and she encourages my beard which I don't get a lot of support outside of the barber shop for haha 1
tjohn7 Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I also enjoy going. Not as frequently as you, but my hair grows like a weed so I'm in there quite often.
Skyfall Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I've gone to the same Barber for years. And I do mean a barber, not a stylist! It's pretty old school and lost in time, from the chairs, to the decorations, to the magazines, to even the conversation. Old School red and white barber pole out front, and he wears the old school Barber Whites. Same glass bottle working dime soda machine from the 50's that I remember when I went to him as a kid in the early 80's. I love it. Hot towel, buzz, straight razor and warm lather shaves, air gun clean off and talcum powder, finished off with a neck and back massage from what appears to be a large industrial belt sander from the 1950's. Previous to that, I lived close to a Military base and got my cuts from an Army barber who was 80 at the time and had been a barber in the Army since he was 18. Best barber I'd ever had, 1
garnett Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Enjoy going to good barber. Do any of you know where you can get a good hot shave in Havana ?
Mckucci Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 There is an awesome Cigar & Barber shop very close to me... I go there every 2 weeks to get my head shaved, and have a cigar. It's a great little shop, I love the whole experience.

leftimatic Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Used to frequent a barber in Vernon (in the Okanagan) when I lived in Kelowna. He would use the straight razor to shave, and then the hot oil face massage. $20 for a shave and a haircut, the place was always busy so I would just plan an afternoon around it and just go down and bullsh#t with the guys. Haven't been to a barber since I bought my DE razor and a electric trimmer. I should go again for the hell of it.
ogus Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Look at my avatar. I used to love the barber. Now I have some spending money.
rmill3r Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Oh, yes! Cool. Most of the places where I live are chains, but I found a local barber shop where this guy operates out of a rented out room in someone's house. It's pretty awesome. Just one chair, you have to make appointments, and he does the full straight razor shave, hot towel and everything. He's been doing it for years, so it's really a work of art to him and he even does cuts for some semi-famous people. I've actually been getting mine cut by this guy's apprentice (cause he's a little cheaper), but the apprentice is the one who cuts the hair for the main guy . . . so I figure, if the apprentice is good enough to cut this guy's hair/shave his face/etc., then it sure as hell is good enough for me. I've been enjoying it.
Phillys Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I shave my face and head with a DE regularly, I would love to find a good barber that does straight shaves. When I am in a city where I can find a good barber, I treat myself, but there are none that I know of in my area. would be nice to have an old school barber near my work, I would probably go once a week just to relax and enjoy a shave.
polarbear Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 There is one decent barber in Darwin Walk into it at any point during the week and you're likely to see some of the richest and most influential men in the NT sitting there having a shave or hair cut. When I asked my father about this he mentioned that its the closest thing some of those guys get to an hour of peace and quiet a week. The phones go on silent and I guess its not advisable to try and check your smartphone while there is an elderly gentleman dragging a straight razor against your throat Even though I don't fit in with the regular clientele (my collar is oh so blue) I do enjoy popping in there once or twice a month for a hot towel shave and some decent conversation 1
NJP Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 Love my new school barber. Pays respects to the old school traditions and not to flashy.
Philski Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 I always seem to get the best haircut from barbers who are from countries where men often tend to be quite hairy. I'm not sure whether that's actually true or not. I've had the same barber for nearly twenty years, he's Lebanese and always does a great job - all scissors and blade, not an electrical tool in sight. A couple of months ago I was away and needed a trim, found a Turkish barber shop. Excellent work, hot towels, the lot. Towards the end, he picked up a metal stick with cotton wad on the end and set light to it. "Hello," I thought. He then proceeded to wave it quickly at my ears and away again - that was a new one. It was to burn away the small hairs growing around my earlobes, etc!

Quite a surprise the first time...!

Dozerhead Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Cool, thanks. It's a little far from where I live but I will give it a try next time I'm in town.
