Thanks all

Very informative.

Sorry to hear about your issue JohnnieWalker. I hope yours comes back as well as mine.

The reason I know it is not the cigars is that I have a box of cohiba maduro genios that were bought separate from the rass and monte 4s and I bought the R&J from a local liquor store last night. The cohibas all tasted perfect only a week ago and the R&Js are pretty consistant. All of the sticks I smoked looked perfect, had perfect construction and draw. I can still smell my cigars. When I open my humidor it smells the way it always does. The monte I smoked had a deep barnyard smell and my girlfriend said the smoke smelled strong and sweet the way it always does.

If it has taught me anything is that the tastebuds have very little to do with cigar perception. According to Wikipedia, the tastebuds can only taste sour, sweet, salt, savoury and bitter. Since I can still taste foods and smell cigars, there must be some other part of the nose that picks out the flavours of smoke. The basic tastes of cigar smoke perceived by my tounge are salt and savoury. The sweet and nutty components of my monte aren't getting into some part of my nose. :P

I will take your advice and take a week off. If they still taste like salt a week from now then I will know it isn't palate burnout and probably hayfever and the drug I'm using for it (fexofenidrine).

If at the end of spring and no meds my taste is gone, then i'll know I completely stuffed :P

At least my cigars get to age a little this time lol

P.S By box codes do you mean the date on the bottom?

My RASS are Sep 13 GUT and my montes are Feb 14 BUM.

Sounds like you have a good palate. I've also tasted nothing but salt, butter-like oil, or nothing at all from those codes and 2014 production in general. They look really nice though.

See, the weird thing is: as you age you start to lose your sense of smell and since flavor is a combination of taste and smell, what happens as the sense of smell declines is that your sense of 'flavor' gets reduced to just the basic 4 tastes (salty, sweet, bitter, savory). But it sounds like you're sniffer is smelling things just fine.

I still think the correlation with the start of a new medication is a culprit here. There's certainly plenty of things out there that will make your sense of taste all cockeyed.

Well, the jury is out.

I just smoked 2 really nice cubans then one of my monte 4s.

Time to face facts, i just bought 25 cuban dog shits.

Ahh the nature of Cuban cigars. Buy a box of Padron 1964s or 1926s and you will have 25 great cigars.

I took Imodium AD last summer, cigars tasted like crap for 6 weeks after that. Drugs can change your taste and smell

I knew a guy who mixed his Viagra with his Metamucil and didn't know if he was coming or going. Didn't affect his taste buds though...

As someone who battles sinus infections on an ongoing basis, loss of taste/smell is part of the territory. Your ability to smell/taste other things is a bit perplexing though because when mine goes, it all goes. With some things, my brain will tell me what I'm tasting but I'm convinced it's just phantom itch. After a course of antibiotics, everything eventually returns though...

Nothing new to add, I agree on taking a break and then slowing down a bit. I tried to smoke 4 or 5 a day for a while and got to the point they were all running together or no taste at all. Ive also heard of people drinking ginger beers and other drinks to clean and refresh their pallete, Ive never tried it though. Best of luck to you!!
