... Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 I usually have something to drink when smoking. Even when I walk around, I carry a flask, bottle or glass of some beverage. Can be water, sparkling water, coffee or any sort of alcoholic (or not) beverage, whatever suits my mood or the cigar. Yesterday was an exception, I was walking around in an apple orchard, picking apples with a friend, and I was smoking a great Punch DC. No beverage to pair up, I was picking small apples (I can easily eat many tiny apples in one afternoon, so no waste and greater variety) of the various varieties growing in the orchard and took bites between puffes. I recommend it greatly! Some apple varieties paired better with the cigar depending on acidity, sweetness and aroma. Such a great experience Anybody out there enjoy cigars with unusual, non drink pairings? If so, in your experience, which cigars tend to be enjoyable without any liquid available? 1
Maplepie Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Back when I first started smoking and feared esophageal and stomach cancer, I would spit when I needed to. Many people find that rehensible but I was raised in different circumstances - much like an olde country boy. Only when I spit will I smoke with no thirst quenches. And that's only when I'm alone and not in public - so rarely. Herfin', I need at least a water. But I've learned to pair any cigar with an drink and enjoy it. Sent by the Enigma on BlackBerry.
cigcars Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Uhm - nah, I have to have iced liquid to cool down my palate. There are some cigars that so mild and easy I can wait a very long while before having to sip on something cool. But I have a tendency to select very strong smokes. Sooooo...
... Posted September 15, 2014 Author Posted September 15, 2014 Maybe some old cowboys can get away with dry mouth smoking... let's see if Skyfall chimes in
Smallclub Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Non drink pairing – good thread. slices of pear, peach, pineapple, mango… In France I've met amateurs who loved to light up immediately after the last dose of strong cheese like camembert or brie, washed with the remaining red wine in their glass… not really my thing.
habanolover Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 70% dark chocolate has enhance more than a cigar or two for me

I read somewhere maybe on FOH maybe not. Anyway it was a fellow who used apple slices to clear his pallet just before a cigar and he would get more flavour from his cigars. Since I have a developing pallet, its in the works. I have tried this and yes it did work, my CC collection is minimal and only have yet to experiment on NC's for the most part. I can say it made a big difference. I use water generally to start on a smoke I have never had, let it develop, and then decide where I want to go with it. Learned that one on FOH.

I often enjoy sparkling water flavoured with fresh squeezed juice of half a lemon with a cigar as the acidity seems to renew my capacity to fully taste the flavours out of the smoke. Could be that citric (and ascorbic) acid enhance the ability to taste... I'm definitely open to suggestions

But you might be on to something, I make my own vinegars and they will really raise the bar for getting full flavour out of beef and pork. Could be the acids for sure. I make a warm pear cider vinegar and honey drink to get me through the winter months might give that a go. Will keep you posted. 1
EuroTrash Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 I actually dislike smoking and drinking anything other than water usually. A big glass of water is a must...anything else covers up the cigar (personally). Maybe I'm weird like that.

That should quash out "back when..." statements and "olde country boy". LOL. 3
Maplepie Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Let me talk the way I want, Keith! We've put up with Smallclub's enough to justify my verbal freedom! Anyway, it was a justified statement to when I was hesitant to start the hobby -Imagine that! Sent by the Enigma on BlackBerry.
Smiley Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 I've read somewhere that pineapple juice could/would enhance some cigar flavors. Haven't tried it yet tho.
cigarbreak Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Peanuts and chocolate covered almonds are awesome pairings, its just that it can get really dry with no liquid lol... I smoke fairly often with no drink and no food pair but I find that after i'm done and take the first sip of water, it wakes up my palate and enhances the finish i'm left with. and then I think, duh, why didn't I just have a glass of water while smoking? I never spit...Its partly due to me being told by my older cousins mentioning to me when I was 15 and starting cigarettes that those people that spit after every few puffs are not truly enjoying their cigarette lol..so I promptly stopped spitting and learned to enjoy the hell out of those nasty sticks to make sure i knew how to 'properly' smoke according to my cousins lol

Maplepie Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Sea Salt Chocolate - hate hate HATE it by itself. Great with a cigar or peaty whiskey. 1
cigarbreak Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Sea Salt Chocolate - hate hate HATE it by itself. Great with a cigar or peaty whiskey. I love Sea salt chocolate, but with milk choco instead of dark. Although in simliar agreement with you, I found that good Dark Chocolate goes amazing with scotch when nibbled

My grandfather was born in france, both he and my father love to do this. But then again a strong cheese is a blue, or taleggio.
cigardude Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 as for non-alcoholic pairing, I enjoy sliced fruits (apples, pears etc.), malt candies, chocolate covered almonds and sparkling water.
