Early in my cigar journey I received boxes of street cigars from friends who knew I liked the odd cigar. I was lucky enough to be friends with a dive buddy who went to Cuba 3 times a year for business and who always brought me back a box of 'Cuban' source unknown. In those days I was happy with the hit or miss quality. It was not until I journeyed to the island of our dreams that I discovered quality varies dramatically and street cigars are not the real thing. I learned from experience that a quality supplier is vital to getting the real deal.

Has anyone else learned from experience? Knowledge is gained from mistakes or so I tell myself.

You get what you pay for. Cheap prices mostly correlate with cheap cigars, whether CC or not. Just because a cigar is Cuban does not mean it will translate into a great experience. A knowledgeable and reputable vendor is paramount. Buying from anyone else is essentially playing the lottery. Less than 1% of the time you hit the jackpot and get a great cigar, while 99% of the time you waste your money.

I was probably about two years into smoking cigars (all NC's bought at drug stores, etc) and had no clue what a good cigar tasted like. My wife to be and I went on a Carribbean cruise that stopped in Cozumel. Of course, all I wanted to do was to find a cigar store that sold Cuban's so I could try one and bring back a box. I don't remember the name of the shop in Cozumel (this was about 12 years ago), but I absolutely savored that "Cuban Cigar" and bought several to smuggle back into the states. I have no doubt now that I was smoking fakes, but to me they were great.

I don't know about others, but this journey which has led me to distinguish between great smokes and not so great smokes has taken a number of years of smoking literally thousands of cigars. Experience is not only the best teacher, to me it has been the only way to learn.

LOL I smoked my first cigar , likely a fake after my first warm water scuba dives in Cozumel. Bought at the store next to the hotel I stayed in. While I had no clue what a good cigar should taste the days events made it a special memory.

Live and learn and smoke great cigars!
