Rye Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Finally this is all put into a perspective I can understand... 4
Jeremy Festa Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Well it's starting to swing towards the YES vote. Fingers crossed for all my Scottish friends and family, that they can pull it off! Go Scotland!
ptrthgr8 Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 I read earlier that the pro-secession Scots are saying they'd still want Queen Elizabeth to be the Queen of Scotland. Is that actually correct? They want to be "free" but still want to have the British Queen as their own? Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk

Cigar Surgeon Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 For some reason... i thought that Diageo was an Indian owned company. My mistake on that one... Turns out only United Distilleries (Dalmore, W&M, etc) is an Indian conglomerate. There are a lot of independent distilleries in Scotland and the two largest owners are Diageo and Japanese based Suntory.

santela Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Ain't making much sense economically, but the heart wants what the heart wants.
Fosgate Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Polls closed. First 3 districts vote stay with the UK http://online.wsj.com/articles/scotland-vote-on-independence-starts-1411018406
Fosgate Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Looks like "no" for independence. http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/scotland-independence-vote/scottish-independence-vote-results-inverclyde-clackmannanshire-orkney-shetland-islands-and-western-isles-vote-no-in-historic-referendum-30597133.html 1
Maplepie Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 looks like it's not happening........ pretty bloody close, that's for sure.
rckymtn22 Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 The BBC is calling the NO side the winners.
AlastairE Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 If they aren't successful this time, can the Scottish government just try again later? How often can they call a referendum on these matters....?
Zigatoh Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 I don't think there's a set time but they need to get permission or something from the government. Basically I don't think they'll get another vote this generation unless something big happens.
potpest Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 If they aren't successful this time, can the Scottish government just try again later? How often can they call a referendum on these matters....? The referendum is set out in the Edinburgh Agreement which stated there must be a vote by the end of 2014. There is no arrangement for another referendum and according to the scottish government it was a once in a generation opportunity. There needs to be an bill passed between the scottish and english governments to have another, I don't think there is a set time scale.
Jeremy Festa Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Give it another 15 years when all the royalists are long gone and they'll get there! Same for us becoming a republic hopefully! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
ptrthgr8 Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Wait, wait, wait... the Scots can't vote on their own fate without first getting approval from the British? Really? What kind of cockamamie arrangement is that? That's just plain goofy. I was really hoping to see Scotland secede from the UK. But the people have spoken for now, it seems. Better luck next time. Cheers, ~ Greg ~

Cheers, ~ Greg ~ They just did vote, and voted against seceding. What would be the point of endless votes - to see how minds you could change in 6 months or a year? Or....how you could differently skew the voting rules to be more in your favour....or if you could intimidate, harass and otherwise bully those who dont believe what you do enough so that they leave and let you win your latest vote? This referendum brought out the absolute worst in people, and divided a people more than I've ever seen, even with the Quebec referendum in recent memory. The Scots have spoken, leave them alone to try to erase some of the divisiveness that will last long after this vote. 1

I think you may have read a bit too much into what I posted. I was simply commenting on some of the prior posts that indicated the Scots could vote again only if the Brits gave them permission to do so. My point being that whether they vote again tomorrow or not for another 100 years, why on earth would they need permission from anyone else to decide their own fate? ~ Greg ~

Cheers, ~ Greg ~ Not sure which end of the stick you've got Scots are British and have their own parliament. They voted in a party who said they would hold a referendum on continued membership of being part of the UK (Being British). They voted to stay part of Britain. They didn't need to ask anyone for approval for anything.
