DrunkenMonkey Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 My understanding is that back in the day the cigar companies successfully pushed these into prominence for one reason: shorter fermentation times, and thus lower cost of production, and so better margins. So basically it was a way to cut corners, compared to the proper way of doing things. I think the slow way is fine. 1
laficion Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Dear everyone, Let's get this straight, CANDELLA Is an American Invention from the 50's. Almost every brand had them but HdM made them famous. It never really took on In other countries. That said, For me,I don't like them ,tooo much acidity with NO taste. I'll leave them to the N.C. makers. Amicalement, Guy
Smallclub Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Let me tell this: In a recent interview in the french magazine l'Amateur de Cigare, the son (or grand son) of the french engineer who created the Quai d'Orsay liga, told that initially a candela version of the Corona claro was expected. But the green wrappers tasted so bad that they abandoned the idea. (I suppose they opted for the claro claro, which was discontinued shortly after anyway…)
Guest gerlinan Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 I would defiantly try the Candela. It was the popular wrapper for many years in 40s, 50s and 60s, so I feel it would be fun to try some just for historical reasons. Plus, it would just be something fun and new.
cdnstogie Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Would want to experiment them before diving into a box. Maduros on the other hand Have seen them around but have never bought - Something I will eventually try
finecigar Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 I would try one out of curiosity but I'm sure never buy a box.every candela I've had was off putting not only by the look and feel but taste lacked...bitter, stale, and practically no dimension. I would buy a box of the maduros hands down
SCgarman Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Leave the candela wrappers back in the 1950s where they belong! Some things of the past should not be resurrected. 3
dogdays Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Of all the great cigars they could bring back , they pick some green wrapper cigar. what are they thinking. No thank you. 2
mikek Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 I have tried A few candela wrappers, meh kind of vegitable and mild! I would definatly go for the maduro! 1
ptrthgr8 Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 If I had to buy a box, I'd definitely take the maduro over the candela. I've tried a few NC candelas (mostly Macs, I think) and they were completely without soul. And that was 15+ years ago, back when I liked some of the Macs in general. I might try a Cuban candela out of curiosity, but I certainly wouldn't plunk down the price of a box without trying one first.
headstand Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Seems to me that if one was to buy a box of candelas, there would be no lack of trades to be made with other inquisitive smokers. No need to be stuck with a box if they don't turnout...
cigarbreak Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Never tried a candela or an 898 but based on the length of this cigar, and what others describe candelas as, I would go for the Maduro. The green wrapper sounds interesting and all but can't imagine myself enjoyng an "acidic" cigar for longer than I have to. That being said I wouldn't mind having a fiver in my humi for collection's sake.
stigmata Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 i have had one claro claro cigar in my life and it was gorgeous...sweet and smooth but rather weird a half century ago these were the wrappers of choice... dunno if id buy a box ... depends on price
santela Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Sure I'll try one. But a whole box? I'll put my money on the maduro.
... Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Bought a fiver of double claro NCs a while back. They were interesting, bit of citrus, pine needles, and quite light. I thought the color was quite nice but sadly I found the profile lacked flavour to satisfy my tastes. Now, if a cigar was blended to be flavourful, with enough body and an overall taste that would compliment the green wrapper, that could be interesting....
polarbear Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Buy Candela by the box (an expensive one at that)? No I'd be keen to try them as I'd love to see what the Cubans can do with a Candela but I've never had a NC Candela that I've enjoyed, so I would approach a Cuban one with a little bit of trepidation A Maduro would also require a leap of faith for me, just not as much of one as a Candella would
Habanos2000 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 I'd definitely be interested in trying one. But a whole box? No thank you and pass the maduro!
Habana Mike Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Box splits with a friend for me. Half green/half brown!

... Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 You mean Partagas D4s? Sent by the Enigma on BlackBerry. Poor D4s, you're mean Just finishing my best D4 in a year... And it's the first of the box hopefully the other 24 are as nice, spicy and sweet, mmmm. 1
Maplepie Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Keep in mind. Many good cigars look like shite. I didn't even comment on the fact that I think they're inconsistent and mostly shite. Wait... Sent by the Enigma on BlackBerry.
