imangelo Posted July 27, 2014 Share Posted July 27, 2014 Someone was mentioning on the Padron thread how the 1926 80th anniversary is one of the few smokes that live up to the high price tag (they are around $35 a pop in the US, almost three times that here in Canada). What are a few expensive cigars that were actually worth the cash or, better yet, we're so good that it felt like you got a deal by the end? I predict some mentions for the Cohiba 1966.... If its no big deal to shell out $20+ for a cigar regularly, then certainly there are plenty of cigars that are |worth" it. If, like me, $20 is relatively a lot of money to spend on something to burn for an hour, I have not yet found one that was completely "worth" it. He went on to explain that the very best leaf and rollers would only add a few cents to the cost of production. This was in the era of the 90's,and Padron or Fuente cigars were under 3.00 a stick. In the US....... Generally this is still true,if you want to figure out how much a cigar costs,remove local taxes,divide by two,that is wholesale. Then subtract two dollars,the rest is profit for the middleman. The factory is making a profit on the two dollar per cigar cost to produce,minus any fancy packaging. I sometimes worry when lighting a cigar >$20 as my expectations are higher and more likely than not I don't have a full box of them to test out. From time to time I will buy REs or special aged sticks that cost a bit more but I only save them for the special occasions life brings me- and if they are truly worth it... can't say yes or no. I've had the pleasure to smoke Dunhills, Davidoffs, GRs, REs, LEs, vintage/pre-embargo stock, and other very expensive sticks on occasion but at the end of the day those can bring much anxiety (cost, expectation, smoking variables) that I would prefer to spend my time enjoying the $5-15 cigars that with careful aging under my control become beautiful experiences that can't be compared because I don't see the alarming dollar signs in my head as I would with the ones that cost as much as my monthly phone bill... 3 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

That's worth Cuba pricing or US pricing for NCs...I just paid $30 for a Partagas Serie P No 2 yesterday at a local B&M here in Toronto and that was a good deal. A BHK 54 in Toronto for example will cost over $100 where as in Cuba it is around $30. Having said that, the best pricey cigar that I have had and definitely worth the cost was the Cohiba 1966. There are many things that might be considered overpriced - I can't imagine spending $100 a month to watch television, or to have a cell phone. The price of gasoline. Cigars can be uninspiringly consistent, or, lacking in any kind of predictablity. I willingly sometimes pay $20 and more for a bottle of wine - if a cigar provides a great experience, I've no problem with $20. Addendum. Some regionals command those prices. Many people talk very well of any UK REs (bar 1 or 2). Then if you're looking at the ED, they'll be double those 20 dollar prices. Humidor and book editions, forget about it!! And those have been all AWESOME. kb20four Posted July 27, 2014 Share Posted July 27, 2014 I used to think it was worth it because I only smoke 2-3 times a week but am slowly realizing that I give away up to 5 sticks at a time when we have family gatherings. I find that I can't smoke a Lusitania and give my guest a petit corona. I give away the same thing as I smoke and that's the main reason I can't age most of my sticks. subport Posted July 27, 2014 Share Posted July 27, 2014 well have to agree it depends on where to buy in general I bought behike 52 in Hungary back in days to try it. costed ~ $65-70.yes it worth it. not because the cigar worth that amount of cash, but I obviously knew it before. not because the cigar was that great all from heaven experience. worth it just because I wanted to smoke it, could afford it, and bought it. never looked back. here in Iceland a low quality RyJ no2, no3 tubo cost approx $22-25. People don't buy Ferraris because they consciously feel they are worth 5X more than a Corvette. They are a better car. They don't buy Elie Bleu humidors because they are 50X better than a cooler at storing cigars. You can spend 10K on a Rolex, and it is a less accurate timepiece than a $20 Timex. I've had many cigars that I'm glad I spent more than $20 on, as a special occasion smoke. A Siglo VI tubo, a Dunhill Cabinetta, a Padron 80th Anniversary, an Edmundo Dantes Conde 109.
