Smokin_Safari Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 So we are off tomorrow to Paris to start the campaign to win at least one game of the tournament. "We" are the Kazakhstan Women's rugby team, whom I was coaching last year through the qualifications against Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and Japan - qualifying 12th for the RWC. After raising some money to employ a coach and staff, now taking a back seat as the GD, we have won the Asian 4 Nations this year and look ahead (with only a little trepidation) to our games against New Zealand, USA and Ireland. With kickoff next Friday, I (we) seek all of your support worldwide for what will be a test of fortitude, attitude. I wish to thank in advance the all-supreme IRB who have shown great care of allowing us 10kg of ice for each game, all the warm water we can drink, booking us in a hotel 45 minutes away from the field / gym / training areas, expected us to attend 'cultural events' such as cooking for Parisien pensioners, and a team photo shoot at the Eiffel Tower at 1pm - don't they know there will be approximately 50 million tourists around?? Oh - mostly importantly, I will be taking a sealed box of 2004 D4s just in case we manage a score - let alone win a game! See you on the TV, Marty 2
Maplepie Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 Woohoo!! Must be really proud! Getting this far must make your whole team ecstatic! Best of luck lassies!!

Susanne Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 Yay Marty!!! Am quite the fan of Womens Rugby (tho I'm not that crazy to play!) and knowing that one of our compadres is going to bring the Kazakstani Womens team to Victory... I will be looking for the matches, and urging your women to Victory!!! (Who woulda thought, eh?) Break legs! Sus
canadianbeaver Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 Best of luck and have a great tournament. That's one rockin' team you've got there!
Perla Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 Keep my Fingers cross! Go for it! Stay in good health!
rsanz Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 I didn't even know you had a team... but I'm not surprised. Women's rugby is everywhere, and everywhere it is it's exciting. Good job in qualifying. You're in a tough pool but I hope you get to smoke some of your D4s.
Smokin_Safari Posted August 2, 2014 Author Posted August 2, 2014 Thanks for the support! Photos below if they make it - I thought the web bandwidth was bad in Kazakhstan - but kiss me whilst you bugger me with a baguette it is damn poor in Paris! We are staying at our apartment (what an investment! and note the distance above that IRB have put us in the sticks!) right in the duexieme addrissemont but I'd rather spread the message with tin cans and string. Although losing to the sheep huggers (it doesn't really work with the girls does it?) we managed a try with our tiny (155cm x 71kg) winger Oksana). Despite the final score, the real stats were 1 x broken ankle (KZ), 1 x dislo shoulder (KZ), 12 x stitches (KZ) + 1 x bucket load of pride (KZ). The ridiculous focus on drug testing (took 3 hours after the match to complete) failed to pick up any drugs or testes. The latter in fact should have been tested for although most of the NZ ladies are bugger thin me (translation = bigger than me) so I won't push it...! We look forward to Tuesday's match against the USA. Incidentally sponsored by Emirates (no visible sponsors allowed at RWC), carrying 34 squad (only 24 allowed at RWC), 18 support staff (only 12 allowed at RWC), an ice bath and exercise bikes on the sideline (none allowed at RWC), 2 team buses (only 1 allowed RWC) - me tinks a boonch of li'l fairies in Dooblin IRB office is gettin' sum cash (I was born in Waterford Ireland so I carry this accent) - Jesus wept, what a double standard! And then Ireland.. oooh, god be gracious! Marty
Smokin_Safari Posted August 4, 2014 Author Posted August 4, 2014 OK - thanks to "Robert", I can try posting the after-NZ game photo.
Smokin_Safari Posted August 5, 2014 Author Posted August 5, 2014 A quick update whilst I try (again) to upload some photos. Despite being awarded the first try, ladies succumbed to the relentlessly executed set pieces by a more practiced team. We look forward to Ireland who later today smashed New Zealand. Best to all, Marty
El Presidente Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Watching France V South Africa on Fox now . Thinking of you mate! ....and well done Ireland!!!! First defeat of NZ Womens team in 24 years.
