stonedpirate Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Hi Just a quick question regarding aging. Being relatively new to the cigar world, I recently proved to myself that aging makes a difference. I bought a monte 2 off a guy who had it in his humidor for a fair while. It had white crystals all over it and had a deep barnyard smell. Was the absolute best cigar I ever smoked. I then bought a box of 3 monte 2s from the Habanos shop at the Dubai airport. No crystals, clean wrappers, faint barnyard smell and didnt taste that great to be honest. If I had of purchased these before the other one I would have thought monte 2s were overrated and not seen what all the fuss is about. Since I am still financially far away from being able to store box after box for the years to come, my question is, what box of cubans would you buy for smoking within the first month of buying? Or are none worth smoking like that? Thanks

Could be that the age made a difference but it also could be that the latter MC 2 you smoked would still be shite if you aged it for 3 years. If you're as new as you say, many of the non-mass produced cigars are very good to smoke ROTT (i finally learned what that stood for! ). As for your budget comment, may i recommend: HoyodM Epicure 2 Bolivar Petit Corona Trinidad Reyes San Cristobal El Principe Partagas Shorts Juan Lopez 2 Those are good starting cigars that aren't too strong in themselves and can be smoked ROTT. Some helpful newbie help Those white crystals are called plume. Very beautiful sight for cigar smokers Thick blobs of white, fuzzy 'crystals' are white mould. Harmless unless on the foot. Aeroport Montecristos, Cohibas, RyJs have never had a good reputation. ROTT = Right off the truck Cigars are subjective** **Note: Results may vary for the results of others. Your cigar journey is yours to discover. Don't let anyone tell you a certain cigar needs age if you find them absolutely perfect when they're young. First rule of cigars is that there're no rules. 2

One of my airport montes had a white blob on the cap, just wiped it off. Luckily I have almost one of each of the cigars mentioned in this thread from a 10 cuban sampler i bought from bilbo baggins. I like the BPC so good to hear its good ROTT. Pity the monte 2 is inconsistent, a bit hesitant about buying them online now. Just finished a Partagas D4 and it was great. Hope they are known for consistency as i would happily buy those by the box. About to order a RASS as i keep hearing about it so sounds like a winner. Cheers guys.

fingerburner Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 SLR Regio or Serie A's never fail to offer something young. But agree with Derrek in that most of the Habanos stuff coming out now is very approachable young. Enjoy your journey of personal discovery as most of other people's opinion are moot.

Bolivar Petite corona, Bolivar corona juniors are definitely the ones, smoking very well fresh. Partagas shorts too. I like H.upmann magnum 46,and psd4 fresh as well, though both of them great with long age. Very different they turn into. Personally don't like rass and rascc fresh as many of us do.
ogus Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Shorts- they are best young and change every few weeks of aging PSD4 but better after a few months recent MO4 from Czar was off the chizang Trini Reyes recently not a exotic as other aged ones but still nice, then again I had one aged one that was terribly mild MO 2 one ROTT was the best cigar ever, the best cigar ever- did I mention it was... but one from the same box was huh?
Vortigan Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Speaking from my own experience (as is all any of us can) the only marque I've found to be unsmokable in youth and actually foul in a couple of instances,is Cohiba,To a lesser degree I find a lot of Bolivar are quite unapproachable too sub 3 years or so. 1

Tonight I have smoked the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure No.2 and the Partagas D4. Both were good. Was going to go to bed because i am blind drunk and it was 2am in the middle of winter but in the name of science i thought i would try one more for comparison sake. Good choice because i just reached cigar utopia. I have smoked the cohiba behike 54, unimpressed for the price. Cohiba siglo Iv twice, not a fan of grassy taste. I dont know if its just the drink or the windless night but I just smoked the cohiba robusto that has just spent 5 weeks in transit and 2 nights in my humidor. Hands down the best cigar i have ever smoked. If it was the only cigar in the world i would smoke it all day every day. I am not a "super taster" due to food die test and have an extremly mediocre palate. I have never tasted honey, coffeee, chocolate, musty racoon or any other flavour in any cigar i have smoked. This cohiba was just perfect in every way. Smooth, tasty and enjoyable. I usually retrohale 3 or 4 times thoughout a cigar to try taste diffent qualities and usually only percieve spice or burning sensation. I retrohaled nearly every drag of the cohiaba robusto and couldnt get enough of it. Cigar perfection for me. Dont know if i was just lucky to get it or if i'm just pissed but just ordered a box of them and if they come close to what i experiencd tonight that is all i will smoke.

If you like the monti #2 buy a box of hq or psp from foh 24:24 sale. As long as you buy them here you are good to go, just keep an eye out for them, they pop up regularly.

Generally, all of them, overall. However, I may buy a box of cigars and you may buy the same cigars from the same year and they may smoke differently. Especially for the bigger brands of Cuban cigars. Also, our preferences for taste/strength may be different. I usually try to plan for 2 or 3 years minimum on a box to try 1 or 2 sticks and decide when I'll open it up again. That said, I agree the current production Cuban cigars seem to be smoking much better at younger ages. Personally, if I can locate a box with 2 or 3 years age on it, I'll purchase those almost every time because that's what I like. The 3 cigars that I've smoked young recently and really stood out as meeting your criteria were. San Cristobal El Principies from 2017 and 2018. Montecristo Edmundos from 18 and 19. Hoyo De Monterrey Petit Robustos, 17 and 18. All of those have smoked nicely with a month to acclimatize in the humidor after receiving them. I have not smoked many 2919's at all but hear very good reports from other smokers. 1
