elam370 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Never really paid attention to it. I mean it sometimes has a good suggestion, but my palate isn't theirs so I don't bother reading.
Smallclub Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 would you smoke more than a third if they taste like crap and if it was wonderful in a third would they get that much worse for the rest of it? Sure. Next step, rating based on one puff…
ptrthgr8 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 They did once put Gina Gershon on their cover....hmmmmm Gina Gershon.. I preferred the Catherine Zeta Jones cover. But, yeah. Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk
bradbrennan Posted June 12, 2014 Author Posted June 12, 2014 What's the observation? They smoked 1/3 of each of 3 cigars from Cuba and rated them? Any establishment that also puts a 9 in front of any number for a rating of the Monte Open should be immediately shut down, burnt to the ground and banished to a deserted island! Just curious, is that the same cigar Rob put in the blind tasting cigar 3?
Skyfall Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Just curious, is that the same cigar Rob put in the blind tasting cigar 3? Yep, it was an intentional curve ball, (probably just clearing out stock) Rob's been pretty outspoken on his opinion of the Open line of cigars. I imagine he got a big kick out of the cigar #3 reveal!! Nobody would have guessed it, (1 did) because nobody actually believes he has these in his store or stock!

soutso Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 I preferred the Catherine Zeta Jones cover. But, yeah. Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk Whilst CZJ is no doubt some beauty, when I look closely at Gina, she looks like a dark, oily, flawlessly smoothly wrapped Monte 2... I do wonder if she tastes like one. 1
stogieluver Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Subscriber for about six years, but it no longer holds the allure it did before I started getting my hands on CC's. I used to await each issue anxiously. Now, not so much. Now that I "know", I now know the ratings are crap, as are most NC's. I would rush out and buy the top rated cigars only to wonder what the #@^% the big deal was. Then, I was enlightened, and the world changed. I will let my current subscription expire. I did learn a lot from it, and the Cuba issue was a tremendous help in preparing for my trip to Cuba not long after that issue came out, but I now get all the CC education and discussion I need here. 1
Wil Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 I used to subscribe but let it lapse. Nothing much of interest in it for me. One thing I could never get my head around was their categorisation of sizes in the reviews section.
NastyPirate Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 When I first started smoking cigars, I gravitated to the CA mag and frequented the website in order to learn. What I found was that the magazine was read by people who generally filled 2 camps: those that were new to cigars and had a bit of disposable income and an interest in learning, and those that THOUGHT they were VIP material and saw themselves as "living the high life". It provides a reasonable syllabus for learning the basics of cigars, and for that I, and I suspect many others, are grateful. I don't think that most readers take the publication seriously, though. I quickly left both the mag and the website, as I was disgusted by the troll nature and back-biting of the website and the over-the-top, gee-aren't-we-special, wow-if-you-only-had-what-we have hook of the magazine. I found the magazine to be incredibly pretentious. I won't waste what little free time that I do have on a publication that is so beholden to its advertisers that they can't give an honest and transparent cigar review or grade. Most of the high-life bling that they cover as "lifestyle forward" I would not be caught dead with, as I am not into conspicuous consumption.
cns187 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 was going to subscribe to it but backed off. The forums are a better read anyways!
El Presidente Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 All reviews are subjective. Bingo. I really don't have a problem with CA reviews. Subjectivity is impossible to measure. Quite enjoy the CA mag on the rare occasions I get to read it. It actually has a remarkable place in Cigar history. Kudos. 2
jayceskinner Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 I am subscribed to the magazine and here's how it goes: flip through for 5-10 minutes then throw in a pile. Not sure why I still get it... I like the HQ images of the cigars and sometimes the collectors corner gets me dreaming. Most of the magazine is BS and I have only been on the site acouple times to read article about Cuba. I get so much more knowledge and fun out of reading posts daily here on FOH- plus it's free and there isn't this snobbery like the mag has ^^ This.
Lotusguy Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Used to read it religiously as a beginner and also participated in the forums. I've simply outgrown it and let my subscription lapse. I do give them credit for helping to get new people into the hobby. The more cigar smokers out there, the better! 1
Ryan Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 I subscribe, I like getting it. As Rob says, it has been influential in the cigar world and specifically the Cuban cigar world. There are sometimes interesting bits of news in it. I generally don't read the interviews, I find the reviews interesting. David Savona and Gordon Mott are actually both really nice, down to earth guys. For a large number of cigar forum members, it was their first cigar forum. Me included. I got help there back in the day, when I had wood mites. While the forum has its problems, it still has a place. A lot of new cigar smokers wouldn't know where else to go with questions. 2
TheDistrictJP Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 I decided that I too, was just reading the articles one time through and then not really going back to it enough so I didn't renew. The magazine came for about another two years so I must have unknowingly did the double renewal thing at Christmas too many times. I have nothing negative to say about the magazine or the content. I enjoy reading and knowing about about the finer things in life, don't know how that equals snobbery in some people's minds. 1
Puros Y Vino Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Not every issue is worth picking up IMO, so I buy selectively and I definitely don't subscribe. The website is good. They do a good job of reporting on both NC and CC fronts. The forums? It's where most CC smokers start but should not end up at. 2
jeremyk Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Got a subscription for free I do like the vintage cc review section also let's some of us dream ! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
kuzi16 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 i dont like CA. it isnt really about cigars. it is about a lifestyle that i dont have. its, at best, a men's magazine that has a section about cigars. the cigar magazine i read is Cigar Press. though it does focus on NCs.
bradbrennan Posted June 12, 2014 Author Posted June 12, 2014 Got a subscription for free I do like the vintage cc review section also let's some of us dream ! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I like it too although I don't think it's meant to be strictly cc it just usually works out that way, I've seen an opus x and a couple others in there occasionally

Popular Post Armaniac Posted June 13, 2014 Popular Post Posted June 13, 2014 Any Magazine that rates Alec Bradley Prensado and Flor de Las Antillas Toro as cigars of the year in 2011 and 2012 should probably be sold in the comic book section. Are you kidding me?? These cigars, and I use the term loosely, beat out all the Habanos for cigar of the year?? My ! 5
mk05 Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 Used to hate it. Then I started reading it critically, looking out for specific things. I began understanding the reviews, and now actually take away a lot from it. So for me, CA has become very informative. 1
