It has me wanting to try one...and I'm not a cocktail guy.

There is nothing quite like drinking a mint julep, smoking a cigar and watching the Kentucky Derby at Churchill downs. If it isn't on your bucket list... It should be.

A most excellent post! While I did read, but haven't had the time to catch the lined vids, this makes me not only want this drink, but everything that it requires to make them frequently!

Before I even try, and lord knows I don't want to mess up that much good liquor, but do you think adding a splash of rum to a bourbon julep would work?

As a virgin to this cocktail, this is the first thing that popped into my mind while reading.

Cheers!

I was on a soapbox about restaurants calling their creations a mint julep, when in fact they are not. Thats not to say that you can't experiment to your hearts content. The only real way to mess up the cocktail, that is, make it unenjoyable to drink (in my opinion), is to make it too sweet. Even when this occurs, I just drink it down some, and add more bourbon. To directly address your question, I think adding a splash of rum would taste fine. Maybe start with just bourbon, take a few sips, add some rum, and then let us know how it works out.

Locally sourcing proper julep cups seems to be quite the task out this way. I am not willing to head to the interwebs just yet, but I may have to.

This is absolutely on my list. Has been for 10 plus years, and I swear one day I'll make it happen!

A good read, thanks!

Reminded me of this quote:

"They say that you may always know the grave of a Virginian as, from the quantity of julep he has drunk, mint invariably springs up where he has been buried." Frederick Marryat, 1839
