El Presidente Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 I may have just had the best bottle of wine of my life. Enjoyed it over two days. brilliant, lush, complex, balanced, beautiful. Thanks to Gino....remarkable gift. What is the best bottle of wine you have had? The one that stays in your mind to this day.
dicko Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Jack Mann fortified from the 1940's. Swan Valley WA. Don't regularly drink fortified but this was ridiculously good.
OZCUBAN Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Penfolds Grange Hermitage and it was free so it tasted even better
Cisco Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 1990 DRC La Tache - I would never spend the money on a bottle but I had friend who generously offered to open a bottle (fellow wine geek). The wine had all the beguiling flavours that red CdN Burgundy is known for, with the addition of that spice one gets from great Vosne Romanee Grand Crus. It had tremendous depth of flavour, near perfect balance, and a finish that seemed to last forever. I recall still tasting it the next day. It was a powerful wine but refined power. It was one of those wines that immediately draws you back for another taste but you fight the urge as want to savour the experience before the wine is all gone...Loved it. Sure there are no great wines, only great bottles...this was one of them for me.
StingMeadery Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 "The Antipodean" Merlot Malbec CabSav 1994 Vintage. Was my favourite for many years... I used to swap cases of it at a time with the Vintner for sacks of fresh crayfish when I had the dive shop. Never knew what it was worth until one day I saw it duty free at Auckland Airport for $467.00 per bottle ! Absolutely stunning sums it up well ! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1

Freefallguy Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Good Friday, 2007: Barossa Shiraz with steak and egg sandwiches and a Don Alejandro custom on the deck of one fine mate with my sons punting a rugby ball about the front lawn. Wine and cigar both premiers, experience… epic!
str8dog Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Not usually a big Bordeaux fan, but the '82 Chateau Palmer that I was invited to share was a sublime Margaux.

That I know my friend, didn't want to get to technical with the reserva especial, but loved the 2 releases, 90-94-96 I think was the best of the two. Had more character to it, with lots of "picotas" on the nose (spanish cherries), great acidity, lovely silky tannins and lots of evolution in the glass. Still have a bottle or two of that one One of the best releases IMHO. But what do I know, I'm just a fish

Amazing eye to notice that with only two possible discrepancies on the labels, with the bottle number a questionable determinant. This man knows his wines! I've tried to consider how to answer the original question but have had many great wines and the experiences whilst imbibing clouds reasonable judgement. It's like asking what the best cigar or sex you've ever had was..... 2007 Shafer Hillside Select comes first to mind however.

This man knows his wines! nice thought but to be honest, not as clever as it might appear. i know that the reserva especial is a non vintage wine and they usually use a mix of three different years. they are mentioned on the front label. 1990, 1991 and 1994 on the right and 1990, 1994 and 1996 on the left. must confess that sort of thing interests me so i immediately check it out. and yes, the total bottle numbers are different.

Fuzz Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Henschke Mount Edelstone Shiraz 2005, then a toss up between the Glaetzer Shiraz 1998 or Kalleske Greenock Shiraz 2006.
Foz Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Marsovin Primus 2009 Original Release from Malta, great, lush and complex wine. Made with Shiraz grapes as well as the only native red grape on the island of Malta, Gellewza....Incidentally, made in the exact same 'Amarone' style as the wine put up by Prez. Wish I had more bottles.
Surucipe Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Chateau l'Angelus 1985 - Amazing wine, I only ever had 1 bottle of it though.
paulF Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 It was a bottle of 1998 Seppelt St Peters Grampians Shiraz that kicked of my wine journey
