Flew to and from Singapore over the weekend.

Removed the Bic from the Iroda. Bic in the Check in. Iroda (pulled apart) in the carry on. No problem.

This will NOT work in China!! No fuel = still confiscated

Unfortunately China is a law unto itself. Also the rule is not always followed. A colleague had a similar experience in Shanghai but after emptying his lighter and pleading with the official, was allowed to put it in his check in bag.

I don't risk it and just get a cheap lighter or matches when I'm there on my work trips.

Hong Kong will let you in with any soft flame and disassembled Irodas. They do spot them in your carry-on, and I've been asked to demonstrate that my vintage Rollagas is a soft flame for them many times. Vietnam bans even bics in the carry-on, but has never stopped me for the Rollagas internationally or on flights within the country. Singapore is as lenient as Hong Kong (if they spot the lighter in the screen, they'll ask you to fire it up and make certain it's not a torch), likewise Thailand, Myanmar, Japan, Taiwan and Malaysia. This is all from my humble experience. Who knows what the rules might be next week/month/year.

I nornally just empty it and carry it in my back pocket... Its typically not enough metal to set off the detectors.. I've never had any issues...

The rules state, it must be empty, in a certified DOT case and checked in your luggage.... However, I've still had my jet taken from my bag!! This is why I just carry it on now...

Found some nifty no-name refillable torch lighters for just over a buck that look like a cheapo butane.

Never had a problem with them after hundreds(!) of trips through checkpoints.

In the pocket or in the bag nobody's ever asked to even look at them.

If they do, no worries just chuck them and get some more.

Only found them in one place in another city I frequent and usually buy a half dozen when there.

I need to ask who/what/where these come from next time I'm there so I can place a big order on Alibaba and share the wealth!

Blazer CG-001, perfect lighter to take on travel with you. Big reservoir that lasts my 10 day trips easily. Not enough metal on it to trip the metal detector.

Warning: no lighters whatsoever in China!! Neither checked nor carry-on baggage. I just learned the hard way when they confiscated my almost new Dupont Ligne 2 tantrum.gif At least they (supposedly - we will see) allow a shipping company to pick it up from the airport and send it home...

Ouch, that sucks. I wouldn't put too much faith in getting your lighter back though...

I've always carried mine on.... In the past, I used one of the DOT TSA certified cases, and my lighter was still taken from me... Now I just empty it and carry it in my pocket. As long as you don't have any other metal on you, the lighter typically is not enough to set off the metal detector.

I did get it back :)

My Iroda that was confiscated at the same time, however, did not make it.

What about full body scanners or a pat down?
