thecapo Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Having trouble in determining proper RH levels when storing full boxes. Currently between 63-64%. Any thoughts? Thanks.
stogieluver Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Perfect. But, as I think Piggy would say, it all depends on temperature. I run my tupperdore at a steady 65% with a 6" tube of Heartfelt beads and the temp is a steady 70-72 degrees in that room. Seems to be working very well for me.
thecapo Posted April 27, 2014 Author Posted April 27, 2014 Piggy designed it for me. Works perfect. 69f - 63-64 rh. Just wondering if an increase is needed for full boxes not singles. Thanks.
stogieluver Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 No expert here by any stretch, but in my mind there's no difference in rh needed for singles vs those in a box.
Dozerhead Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 I keep mine at 65%, but I think you will find your own personal preference over time. It's hard to say what is the "best" because there are so many variables, such as temperature, as mentioned before. And my experiences are similar to Stogieluver, there is no diffence needed between singles and boxes, both do just fine for me at 65%.
olotti Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I've found 65% best for any cigar and my coolers have Heartfelt 65% beads in em and they're great, sometimes the humidity drops to 63 and its still fine. Get some beads from Heartfelt, they have a calculation on the site and you can give the dimensions of your humidor, cooler etc on the site and it gives you the amount you'll need. Beads are the best just set em and forget em and when it gets a little dry ie more white beads than clear just give em a little spritz and your good to go for another few months.

LLC Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Sounds to me like your set up is fine the way it is for boxes or singles.
Ginseng Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 My coolers have been cenetered at 62-65% for quite a while. Temps 62-70, basement. Smoking adjustments from this range are absolutely minimal. Wilkey
Smalls Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Interesting question. I have a 150 quart cooler with 2 pounds of heartfelt beads in it. I haven't been able to get the humidity above 60% in the last couple of months. I added a couple of boxes and quite a few singles when it dropped. The temps over that time have been consistently around 66-68F. I keep waiting for the beads to catch up, but it has been holding at 60% for pretty much the entire time. The cigars have been smoking fine.
Rye Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I aim for 65%, but I go with the ebb and flow of my surroundings. My plug rate is minimal, and my pleasure rate is astounding!
LeafLover Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 58-62 rh in both I assume. They have been running there for last three years. Last year my hygrometers stopped working. Never replaced them. Heartfelt beads. Fridges run on timers.
Habana Mike Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Piggy designed it for me. Works perfect. 69f - 63-64 rh. Just wondering if an increase is needed for full boxes not singles. Thanks. If Piggy designed it for you it should be all good. Sounds to me you are right on the money. Just relax and have a cigar
Dave O))) Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Mine sits around 62-3% and like Rye said, I have noticed a reduction in plugs with certain cigars compared to when it sat between 65-70%. All my young cigars improve rapidly after brief storage at the former rh.
sw15825 Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Having trouble in determining proper RH levels when storing full boxes. Currently between 63-64%. Any thoughts? Thanks.[/quotes] This works for me. My coolers maintain slightly less humidity in winter because the air is so dry here with heater running. I aim for 68 to 70f and 63% . Sometimes swings between 60 and 65% percent is not uncommon as seasons/weather changes here. What I learned from piggys posts in past was how the amount of water vapor in my cigars change as temp changes. It is true that keeping my temp as stable as possible is actually more important than worrying about the few percent of RH change. For instance, I leave the temp in my home/room where my coolers are, set to constant temp. 24/7. My cigars started smoking better with this in mind. What type/ % beads are you using?
dvickery Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 hygrometers are inherently inaccurate ... altitude plays a role in cigar storage ... as does the climate of your locale . my suggestion ... find out what rh works for you(it just takes a little time ... i started at 65%) ... with the (inaccurate) hygro that you have . as to hygrometers and calibrating ... if your hygro can be calibrated ... throw it in the garbage and get one you cant fiddle with . derrek
lipher Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 It's very subjective, but I try for 62-62. This!! I found this works best for NC and cc
backslide Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 67.235323434634511234% at 69.3425625672523452354235 temp EASY! 1
