They are packed in boxes of four chests. fuzz, great post. very interesting. and it definitely follows closely the cuban method. cohiba the ultimate example, but we've seen it with rums as well. my first trip, i got an aged santiago rum. still one of the greatest rums i've ever had. it was a tiny production rum, black wavy bottle. 1,000 bottles i think. for some anniversary i think, as well. again 20 year material. from memory, about $100 - so very expensive for a cuban rum at the time.in cuba, at least. stunning stunning stuff. a few trips later, saw it again but was surprised as i knew it must have been sold out. bought a bottle - similar price or possibly a bit less? anyway, another great rum but to me i always thought it fell fractionally short of the first. i think if i'd not tried the first, i'd have loved the second as much as i had the first. there were very very tiny differences in the labeling - but in cuba, that could mean absolutely nothing. did some research. i believe that the first was so successful that they re-did it. as best they could. exactly like they have done here. my guess would be that this new rum will be stunning. whether it will match the original, remains to be seen. my guess - it will be great though may not quite hit those heights. but i'd still be very keen to buy it.
avaldes Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 I too have had Cuban Matusalem, sometime around the 2002 timeframe. It had a different label than the Anejo above, though it was 12 years ago that I last saw it. To this day it was the most memorable Cuban rums that I have sampled. I would pay a good amount of money to drink more today.
TiminBC Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 More of a whiskey drinker but a friend brought me a bottle of Ron Zacapa XO 23 year old. I cannot imagine a better rum. Not Cuban but worth mentioning
treberty Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 M1.jpgM2.jpgM3.jpg Bought two bottles at Varadero Airport duty free around ten years ago. IIRC, it sold for a moderate premium over other brands. Never seen it before or since. Taste is excellent, rather dry. Among my favorites. Matusalem was also my favorite Cuban rum... haven't seen it in Havana since at 2001-02. Once I went to the Casa del Ron y del Tabaco, on Obispo, and asked the expert there about the Matusalem. He said that it was not sold in Cuba because of the brand name (!) that was owned by non-Cuban interests (I think it's now based out of Florida and distilled in DR, but I could be wrong). I'm thinking they stopped producing because it was doing well - Cuba would not be the same without the Cuban flawed logic...
