FLB03TT Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Straight cut, punch, V cut- horses for courses depending on ring gauge and/ vitola. Assuming you've chosen the right/preferred cut for your chosen stick, do you re-cut some way into your smoke? In my experience some sticks absolutely require this if you're getting a tar glob, say on a punch cut. I've also found that V-cut figurados start great but halfway thru the draw can tighten and a secondary straight cut opens the draw and "freshens" the 2nd half. What are your experiences?
Habana Mike Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Yep, generally a build up of tar or the draw on a belicoso needs a loosen up. Pretty rare on the first with Habanos, happened much more frequently with the others.....
StingMeadery Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 If tar build up is getting intense and unpleasant on the lips I do reclip. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
dvickery Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 i do quite often these days ... first clip (as little as possible) and check the draw and light . because i clip so little ... the draw does tighten up as the cigar moistens while being smoked (i dont wet the cigar myself(or chew on it)) ... if this is tar then good i know what it is now . derrek
ebhead Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Unless the cigar is plugged or very tight on the draw I just pitch it if tar build-up occurs. And even on those occasions where it's plugged or whatnot its very rare that I re-clip, I'd rather start on a new cigar and enjoy it rather than fight with it. E
Smallclub Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 I smoke "dry" (ie I don't suck my cigar ) and I never have tar buid-up on parejo shaped habanos. Never.
shlomo Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 I may have experienced a tar buildup that required a 're clip once. Maybe never even. It is not so common for me. Only time I ever cut again is if the draw is very tight. Almost never once the cigars already been lit though.
foreese Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Never need to with Habano's, sometimes on others.

Had about 4 or 5. I punch cut them and every one at about the 2/3 point have a small glob of tar in the punch hole. These are young, but the Epi. #2s are known to smoke very well when young and these are no different. After I straight cut 1/16 inch off end the tar visually is gone, the taste freshens/cleans up and off we go for the final third.
tmac77 Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Never had to re-cut but I have forgotten to cut it prior to lighting.... usually after a few too many beverages.

I'm not saying I havent noticed tar or whatever on the inside of the cigar, just that it never affected the taste enough to warrant risking ruining the cigar to clip a bit more off...
dicko Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 I do this fairly often. Just a few millimetres freshens it up
nick17 Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 For mr I would say about 30% of the cigars I smoke I re-cut for one reason or another lately i have been getting the brow tar after about the half way mark but that could be because I am smoking in a cold garage and that might be making that happen more frequently so if I take that out I would say 10-15% tops
PapaDisco Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I rarely do this, but a triple header with a set of Punch Punch required it on one stick, so perhaps most of us suffer with slightly insufficient draw that could be fixed with a wee bit of nip and tuck. Mostly, I believe, that when there's a plug or constriction of some sort, that it's almost never right at the head and thus cannot be cured by a second clip.
