JohnnyO Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Its official, April 1st the CUC will be eliminated. The Cuban Peso will be the currency after that. The CUC is trading on the street 1:1 now, the number might go higher as the date approaches. John
CaptainQuintero Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Thanks for the update John, it's good to see you posting here too!
JohnnyO Posted March 23, 2014 Author Posted March 23, 2014 They are referring to it as "Day Zero", when it goes out. John
Nino Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Wow - thanks for the info, do you have a source, I can't find anything in the Cuban sites. Glad I listened to my contacts there and left Cuba with one Cookie left in my pocket as a souvenir. Normally I take the remaining money along, this time I bought a bottle of 15 yr old Vigia and stuff to get rid of the Cookies as I had the Information the day was near when the CUC was replaced by the MN or CUP ... but this soon ...
Dara Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Seeing as Cigars are only priced in CUCs on the island, I assume this will lead to prices going up ?
MrGinger Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Shitty. I always have some CUC left over from previous trips. I was saving some for my upcoming December trip. Does anyone know if I will be able to swap it in Dec, or is it worthless after April 1st? 1
MPS Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Just got off the phone with a friend in Havana and he didn't hear about this yet. I'm not taking any chances though so I will send my funds over to change. He said they are trading normal where he is now. 1 CUC = 24 Pesos Cubanos.
Cohiba Stevie Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Hard to find some concrete info on this... Would appreciate any input as I have a mule heading out there in April...
EuroTrash Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 I'm going to Havana with a few guys April 5. Does that mean we should not be getting cuc when exchanged? How do I know what kind of exchange I should be getting? I'm not familiar with the standard peso. What is the value of a CUC should someone try to give me this then? I'm afraid this will create temporary confusion and yet another way to scam tourists.
EuroTrash Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 I can't find this anywhere else either. Early April fools?
oliverdst Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 I read about it somewhere and they mentioned that it's not April's fool.
EuroTrash Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 http://www.cnbc.com/id/101500561 There are plenty of articles speaking of it coming but there is not mention of a date.

straizor Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 hmmm. is this a good or a bad thing for us tourists if i want to buy cigars? would be very interested in the real exchange rate, since i'm going to cuba on the 3rd of april
Nino Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 There are plenty of articles speaking of it coming but there is not mention of a date. X2 - Still nothing on the Cuban sites. 1

The idea was planned in 2011 and it should be implemented by a law signed this year ... very quickly and ... any day now. I do believe it will be soon, the rumours in HAV are rife. I do believe it will be soon, the rumours in HAV are rife. It might also be mañana ... i talked with manuel fröhlich( i guess you know him ) and we had a pretty good discussion about this matter. at the end of the day we land at the airport, change the money and get what we are given. not much we can do about it. hope it works out para il pueblo, not that it goes like the euro change in the beginning( in italy for example)
