This is my magic box of Coloniales, my personal favorite offering of the Trinidad marca. It's got it all. The rich oomph of the Robusto Extra, the complexity of flavors in the Fundadores, yet the Coloniales feels like a removed cousin in the Trinidad family. There's no theme of fruit and orange juice that appears in aged Reyes and Robusto Extra, or the classic cotton candy of the Fundadores. Perhaps that's why people tend to shy away from the Coloniales. I think that's why I like it so much, because it is so unique.

This box was an absolute flavor bomb when it was fresh. Just pure green tea and cream, wonderful yet clearly a departure from the rest of the marca. Now with several years, it has settled into something remarkable.

The beginning offers a familiar feel, but it isn't Trinidad that I'm relating to. No, this tastes like a Cohiba Lancero, with a lingering grassiness in the forefront, introducing an oily layer of Brazilian nuts - a symphony of complex spices, vanilla, and woods - then finally leaving a long creamy finish.

As the cigar progresses, the intensity of the grassiness ramps up, but it is a welcoming crescendo. The extremely long and oily finish begs for another sip, but this cigar must be enjoyed slowly.

Halfway through, the intensity is unrelenting. The orchestra that is the Coloniales is now resonating and in perfect sync, producing puff and puff of intoxicating perfection. Did I mention that I'm in cigar heaven?

Enjoyed immensely for an ~1:15. A fantastic Trinidad, like no other. This is also the last year I've purchased these. I wonder how the recent vintages compare.

Awesome review! The Coloniales are one of my favourite cigars too. The box I have from 2010 (AGR MAY 10) are stellar and smoking great. I also have a box from 2011 (MSE NOV 11). I have only smoked one from the 2011 box and, while an enjoyable smoke, wasn't as good as the 2010. There was quality there though, and I remember thinking (hoping) that the cigar needed more time. The cigar was just over 1 year old, so that might have something to do with it. I'll try another from the 2011 box and do a review this summer. I've been waiting for the Coloniales to show up on the LFTW but so far still waiting.

Check out the box of Coloniales that I found in Varadero, Cuba at the LCDH on Calle 39. Beautiful, shiny, dark, blotchy wrappers. Can't wait to try one, but that will be a while yet.
