polarbear Posted January 14, 2014 Share Posted January 14, 2014 With Valentines day fast approaching I need to start looking at a bottle of scotch I can get the missus instead of flowers and chocolate. Problem is, I'm not a scotch fan and the last 2 bottles I knew that she was keen on, I bought for Christmas. So, what's a good Scotch, I can get in Aus from a Vintage Cellars (we dont have a Dan Murphys up here) for around $150? Her fav scotches are Lagavulin 16 Ardbeg 10 year old Aberfeldy 12 year old Se likes dark, peaty, smoky scotches Any help appreciated Thanks guys PB 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Hohenthal Posted January 14, 2014 Share Posted January 14, 2014 Aberfeldy is a floral and honey-sweet non peated whisky - if that profile is an alternative I would recommend Glengoyne 15 or 17 as well as Glendronach 15, if you want to go with peat monsters, as stated above, Laphroaig Quarter Cask, Ardbeg Uigedail or Port Charlotte 10, Lagavulin Distiller's Edition, Caol Ila 18... There is an awesome online retailer that has absolutely everything, mainstream and obscure. Better prices than any chain too delivered to your door. I prefer it to the quarter cask and its a bit more special than the ten year. Also, its pretty easy to find. Ardbeg coryvrecken is also great. Louich Posted January 16, 2014 Share Posted January 16, 2014 Aside the dark part of it (coloration is just a marketing stunt IMO). Any port charlotte from Bruichladdich would hit a nice spot if you want to steer away from smome and stay in the peat. If not an under rated little known distillery I love and shows lots of ressemblance to Lagavulin IMO is Caol ila. The quater cask of Laphoaig has a medecinal side that some will like others wont. The 10 yrs is a sure bet. And last but not leat there is always Talisker that has a very balanced product and is liked by almost (okay evryone) I know. Rogers72 Posted January 16, 2014 Share Posted January 16, 2014 As mentioned, if she likes Lagavulin 16, Ardbeg Uigedail or Corryvekken are very similar in character and both GREAT pours. Additionally, I am really digging Talisker Distiller's Edition and it isn't too far off of that character. Oban Distiller's Edition would also be a great choice.
