El Presidente Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Blind Cigar tasting number 5 shouldn't be that difficult Post your reviews here but don't call it. E-mail me with your pick (thanks to all those who already have). I will provide an extra weekend to get them in as this is our last of the 2013 blind Review Competition. Good luck all!
Habanos2000 Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I'd like to start by saying that it's probably been at least 15 years since I've smoked a DC. My first impression was the significant weight of the stick. It really felt substantial. That weight felt good. I was looking forward to smoking it the moment I had it in my hands. Upon punching the cap the dimple underneath was clearly evident. To me that is the sign of a finely rolled cigar. The wrapper had fine veins and a smooth sheen. My appetite was whetted. The cigar was immediately medium bodied and went right into a cedary flavor profile. This lasted through the first third and the cigar burned perfectly. Just the right amount of resistance and tons of smoke. The second third did not change much as the body of the smoke was still medium but the flavors started hinting at some floral aspects. For a cigar of this size it was performing perfectly. The final third finished on a high note with the strength picking up a bit to med/full and the flavors developing into wet leather, dark tobacco and more cedar. At the end this was a damn fine smoke. I've not much experience with DC's, but this was truly a fantastic cigar. Not sure what it was but I'll give it a 93.
Dimmers Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Wow. Similar experience with me as well, though with some sweet notes throughout. Such a smooth cigar, perfect construction, perfect burn, perfect feel, wondefully balanced, lots of nice dense smoke. Are DCs generally this good? Just wow. I wish I had time to smoke DCs on a regular basis - Im a slow smoker, this took me around 2hrs 15 mins.
Rye Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Very nice looking cigar, great construction, and slightly tight draw. Great combustion and smoke volume, and I found mine quite mild to start. Very fragrant cigar, giving me floral and woody tastes. Gains strength slowly and still doesn't reach a medium profile for me into the second third. I only have 2 DC's in my collection, and I am certain this is neither, but it does taste a bit familiar. This cigar was a great way to spend a couple of hours, and was indicative of this whole experience. Thanks to Rob and the team for putting this experience together for us, and I really hope I can catch it in the years to come. I enjoyed this cigar down to the last puff. Cheers!
Jeremy Festa Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Smoked it last night. Was pretty impressed with it. It was the fuller side of medium for me, ramping up to full. The smoke was actually very weighty, sweet and aromatic. It was a little taste journey, changing a couple times throughout, and I would describe this as a dessert cigar. While I have only ever smoked this vitola a handful of times previously, this most recent experience has made me realise, that I need more spare time in my life. Newest DC fan. Narrowed it confidently down to two options, and I went one way, especially due to the way it finished off. But reading other's experiences, I am thinking I should have gone the other way. Have to wait and see. Good luck everyone.
Rye Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 Rye, great photos bro, thanks! Thank you! It's too bad I am not as good at picking blind tasting cigars! ;-D
vondegroot Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 Mine too, was mild - but very tasty! Pretty sure I got this one figured out. I know a good CAO when I smoke one.
riazp Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 mine had a very tight draw to almost being plugged and I had to chop off about an inch off it in order to get a draw from it. All in all from what i did smoke it was a light cigar, flavorful though
Paul3 Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Took some time yesterday to sit down and enjoy this one....fantastic smoke and easily my favorite of the 5. I currently have a cab of DC's, untouched as of yet, in the humidor...hoping mystery number 5 is of the same brand.
Drguano Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Happy Halloween! I am smoking #5 as I hand out candy. Pretty sure it isn't a Trini Reyes or RASCC. I have been giving the kids a choice between a cigar or candy. None have even asked if they are Cuban or not. Kids these days. I am enjoying the cigar. Cedary, rich and tasty. I will buy more to see how they age.
CanuckSARTech Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 Rye, great photos as always! Awesome staging there. Pres - ummmm, so what date do we have until to get this done?
Sutton Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Smoked mine on Friday! Cigar was very light at first. Then Earthy flavours rolled in and near the end had a toasted flavour with a very familiar spice. Slight hints of a wood taste , but wasn't overpowering by any means. Overall it was a very enjoyable cigar. I need more DCs and Churchills in my humi , it's nice to have a large smoke once and a while. I really enjoy the ride bigger cigars have to offer.
Misterblue Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 Fun pictures Rye. I enjoyed #5 at a classic cigar bar just a few blocks from the Capital in D.C. That alone made #5 my favorite of the bunch. Although there are plenty of double coronas resting in my humidors, I have relatively no experience in smoking them so I am sure this will put me at 0 for 5. This DC was a nice mild-medium strength, lightly toasted bread, woody in the second-third but otherwise stayed the course throughout. This cigar's flavor reminded me of an old steamer trunk when it is opened.
Smallclub Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 After reading the reviews I think I know what the cigar is!
Habanos2000 Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 After reading the reviews I think I know what the cigar is! that's what I said! the last 4 times!!
El Presidente Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 Did we ever find out what Cigar 5 was? I have a fair idea Back from the warehouse last night and will post the the spreadsheet tomorrow/weekend latest.
ckearns Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 I smoked blind cigar #5 and it reminded me of a cigar I had once before, a _______. Same as the first, it just never took off. Each draw you sit there thinking this could be the one where it makes the turn. Those flavours and brilliance its hinting at are on the edge and about to come over. Unfortunately that never happens. Guess sent to Prez. Thanks again Rob for organizing this and I look forward to next year's.
CanuckSARTech Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Rob, haven't smoked it yet, but completely blind guess sent, if I can't get to smoking this on Saturday night prior to this going up...
