winelover Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 All things being equal especially price, which would you go for? Obviously we are comparing apples with pears as Islay malts are very different to Speysides. I have picked up the Laphroaig 18 for just £39 as it is "reduced to clear" at my local tesco supermarket, whilst they have the Nadurra for just £36. Both bargains especially as they have online asking prices of c. £72 and £46 respectively. And just before I picked up the Aberlour A'bunadh for just £33.50 . I like my Islays and really enjoyed the Laphroaig QC but heard mixes reviews of the 18. Also not great fan of e150a. The Nadurra really appeals too as cask strength natural colour and also non chill filtered and just 2 yraes younger at 16yo. Any views? Help please. Thanks Graham
Hiroshiro Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 the Lively over the Lapper if all prices were equal. I think the full enjoyment can be found in the lively due to the crisp taste. plus day in day out the Lively just gives you consistency across the board
Lotusguy Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 For THAT price, I'd get both. If it has to be only one, I'd skip the Laphroaig - caramel coloring should be banned!
Optic101 Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 If only 1 I would go for the Nadurra, but the price us great for both. Such a sale is rare, get both or 2 Nadurra.
sengjc Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 That's criminally cheap. You should see what we pay for these in AUS.
Zigatoh Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Another one for the nadurra, bloody lovely it is.
winelover Posted October 26, 2013 Author Posted October 26, 2013 Thanks Guys. Will pick up the Nadurra too. The supermarkets here do some fantastic offers from time to time.
winelover Posted October 26, 2013 Author Posted October 26, 2013 Look at what u made me do.... Whisky talk can be very persuasive How much did it set you back?
khomeinist Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I don't think much of Laphroaig 18. Is far below something like Lagavulin 16 IMO. Caramel color aside, I don't think the flavor profile integrates properly. The sweetness and the peat do not blend well on the palate. I like Glenlivet though. Even the 10.
ckearns Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I'll buck the trend and pick the Laph as I think its superior to the Nadura. There's a beautiful sweetness to the Laphroaig 18 that makes it unique compared to other Islays, imo. And as Claus said, taste and see for yourself for that price. Cheers.
winelover Posted October 28, 2013 Author Posted October 28, 2013 I got them both in the end. As I held supermarket receipt coupons I paid £36 (half price then net of £3 coupon) for the Laphroaig and £31 for the Nadurra (£10 off then net of £5 coupon). Sorry to boast about prices, can't help it For what it's worth, the Nadurra was on my radar but the Laphroaig wasn't (at least not the 18yo) but the price was extremely persuasive. New supermarket targets for me are the Bruichladdich Laddie Ten and the Lagavulin 16 which will hopefully be heavily reduced at some point. Cheers G

The sweetness is thankfully atypical. Artificial sugar substitute comes to mind. This would be decent bottle at $30 USD. At $80, it just is not up to standard. Finding it heavily discounted at Tesco or wherever doesn't surprise me.

In defence of the Laphroaig 18, it was given an 87 by Serge Valentin (who didn't mention artificial sweetness) and a Ralphy 85 so I don't think it can be seen as only a good buy at entry level prices.
sengjc Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 ...I paid 36 (half price then net of 3 coupon) for the Laphroaig and 31 for the Nadurra (10 off then net of 5 coupon)... That is more than half-off what would be considered a good price for either malt in Australia. In the case of the Laphroaig 18, nearly a mere third of the RRP in AUS! :(
winelover Posted October 29, 2013 Author Posted October 29, 2013 In the case of the Laphroaig 18, nearly a mere third of the RRP in AUS! :( Tesco had the Laphroaig 18 at £78.00 originally and online it is cheapest at £72 and these are normal UK prices. I was just lucky.
Louich Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 Damn ! At those price I would be all over some talisker 18 yo.... Unfindable here in Canada. I would personnaly choose a laphroaig 18 before a Glenlivet. (I have to confess I never tried that particular bottle.) But I am more a smoky-peaty lover of Islay (and Talisker as mentionned) than the Highlands.

Yeah. I don't really defer to those folks. I don't think your friend Ralphy was terribly complimentary though. I don't recall exactly. Try it for yourself. Make up your own mind. I don't think this whisky needs much of a defense.

khomeinist Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Are those reviews blind? Let me know if you think the sweetness is well integrated with the peat..... Hope you enjoy the bottle. I found it passable, just not extraordinary.
winelover Posted November 18, 2013 Author Posted November 18, 2013 I got both. Yet to try either. Thanks.
Hiroshiro Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Try the Lapper first then the Nadurra. Just a suggestion. cheers!
