Webbo Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 Although a whiskey man in the main occasionally I hanker after a really sweet rum to sip neat, particularly after a heavy dinner, almost like a desert wine. What would be your recommendations for the sweetest/ caramelist(not real word I know) rum?
paullie Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 I was gonna say the shrubbs orange rum but after a heavy dinner maybe black seal rum - at 151 proof should be sweet and give a kick at the same time ;-)
SMQQKIN Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 Bourbon and whiskey are my preference as well. However with a cigar, you cannot go wrong with Zaya or Ron Zacapa 23. I prefer Zacapa but it is about +$20 a bottle more than Zaya.
Colt45 Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 First that comes to mind for me is Cruzan Black Strap. I don't know if it would be exactly what you're looking for, but it's a Navy style rum - big molasses and for me buttery. I'm also A Gosling's Black Seal fan - sweet enough but not overly so. I'll drink it neat, a cube of ice, or mixed. I also enjoy the Zacapa.

ptrthgr8 Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 The Zacapa 23 is one of my favorites. At least one bottle a month as a treat. I also get a bottle of the Cruzan Black Strap and Cruzan Aged each week. I like to mix the two, but will sometimes hit the Black Strap on its own. Cheers, Greg Sent from my DROID RAZR MAXX HD
ajgagnon Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 That Legendario Elixir is sweet indeed. They call it rum but it's a dessert sipper. Would go nicely with the right cigar. Tiramisu sweet. 1
Babaloo Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Zacapa , very smoooooth. I aslo like Zaya Rum
Philprop Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 I found that "the Kraken" rum is very very sweet. A bit of kick to it but super sweet.
sengjc Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Zacapa Solera 23 and Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. Sweet, yet balanced and complex. Excellent digestive.
Hiroshiro Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Thanks for the Recommendation guys I think its fantastic. I'll try the Zacapa Next My dad said to try the Bacardi Solera. Apparently his favorite but So far the Zaya was pretty cheap and great flavors 1
Ginseng Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 I find the Zaya to be slightly sweeter than Zacapa but both are quite sweet. I'd regard both to be dessert-ish. Wilkey
headstand Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 The Kraken is certainly sweet if that is what you are after - too much so for me. Legendario is more balanced but there is a taste there that took me some time to get used to (infused with the essence of limes perhaps?). Zacapa 23 is where I go if I feel like a bit of a splurg as it is pricey enough and tends to disappear rather quickly i will have to try the Zaya.
garbandz Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Ron Matusalem has a lovely molasses character and is very smooth. +1 for Zacapa Try Pyrat rum....Honey and citrus, after being open for a few weeks, it gets very fragrant and smooth.
Hiroshiro Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Got a recommendation I must say the sting at the beginning with the aroma and taste is great. Must find a creamy cigar to pair this with
Webbo Posted October 5, 2013 Author Posted October 5, 2013 Damn your eyes FOH members, (just passing on the message from my wallet and liver). Tried the legendario & zacapa both superb in different ways. Maybe the Legendario was almost exactly what I was thinking of but the Zacapa was also magnificent and will need to become a resident in my cabinet. The problem is I need to now try the others you have all suggested. So to summarise, was looking for 1 new drink, now have found 2 and counting(quaffing)!
paulF Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Love Ron zacapa 23 and the 26 but the price difference makes the 23 the ultimate pick although the 26 is a bit smoother and bit more aromatic. Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva is a great bottle too.
fokker4me Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Try Zaya it is very similar to Zacapa but slightly sweeter and more aromatic vanilla nose. 1
TM-US Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 That's a new one- I've never heard of Zacapa 26. We get the 23 and the XO.
Ken Gargett Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 That's a new one- I've never heard of Zacapa 26. We get the 23 and the XO. ditto. i know they do a few different things but never come across a 26 out here.
BonVivant Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 ditto. i know they do a few different things but never come across a 26 out here. Zacapa 23 +1
paulF Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 I thought the XO is made of 26 year old rums...forgive my ignorance if I'm wrong please!
paulF Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Just googled it and seems like the XO is blended from stock aged between 6 and 25 years.Apologies about the confusion
sengjc Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 The Zacapa is a solera blend which means that there will always be a component of really old stuff.
tmac77 Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Vizcaya VXOP Cask 21 Rum is a very sweet Rum and not very expensive can find it for under $50 in the US.
