bigharpoon Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 I've finally had the opportunity to smoke enough Juan Lopez to know I want them to be one of my next box purchases. So far all of them have been the No.1 vitola which is one of my favorite sizes. I've read on here about how the No.2 is rocking out right now and are consistently good from month to month and the No.1 isn't getting much press lately. So my question is where does the No.1 stand in comparison to the No.2? Are they a crap shoot of quality right now? I've also heard they are a bit of a different profile. All things being equal I prefer corona gorda over robusto so any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Blakes Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 I just got a box of JL1's today in the post from the last LFTW Had one straight away and it was Fantastic. I've had a hand few of the robusto's lately and they were stella too, but like you I much prefer the corona gorda vitola over the robusto, and even though I've only had one out of the box I'm glad I went with the 1's over the 2's.
Habana Mike Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Another +1 on the JL#1 I usually keep the #2 in stock though I recently picked up a box of the #1 and they're smoking fine. I too prefer this vitola over the Robusto.
ramon_cojones Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Well if you enjoy the 1 and you prefer the cg AND you've never had the 2 I imagine the choice should be quite clear. 1
Dbone Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Well if you enjoy the 1 and you prefer the cg AND you've never had the 2 I imagine the choice should be quite clear. Maybe not my friend. I'm often confronted with this similar decision in regards to cigar purchases. On paper the decision should be clear. However when you begin to mentally materbate over what box to buy it comes down to; go with what you know, or try something new and the decision can be unclear. Best advise I'd give, which is repeated often, just buy one. Actually, go crazy and buy the one you don't want. No two boxes are the same, this won't be the last box you purchase, the rabbit hole is deep, there will be sales next month, etc.. Just to toss my $0.02, CG is a favorite vitola. But, I've plowed through 2 cabs of JL2's and working on the third. Actually kinda burnt out on them (no pun intended) so they're lost in the humidor. You ever make up your mind and commit to killing a box, sometimes it can drag on and on lol =)
ramon_cojones Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Normally I'd agree with you sir but he's not purchased a box of either so he should go with what he knows and likes for the time being and buy some singles of the jls2. If he loved the jls1 and had a history with them then yes I would say it would be a good chance to branch out at that point.
Smallclub Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 I prefer the corona gorda size but I much prefer the flavors of the No.2 and I find it to have more JL typicity…

If you don't have to make a decision quickly, I'll send a #2 your way so you can have a better idea for yourself. I believe the #2's I have are a 2012 box code.
EuroTrash Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 I'm the same. The #1 is a refreshing change every now and then for me. The #2 has never grabbed me. There are other robustos out there that I enjoy much more.
next Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 I have 2 boxes of JL1 (both BUR MAY11) and 1 box of JL2 (LTB DIC12)..... I´ve smoked 1/2 of each. Although, I like coronas gordas vitola to much BUT.... the JL1 are excellent cigars.... IMHO these robustos are better in terms of flavour and quality construction than cg....
Wicky Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 just cracking into a new box of 2s. They have been very good with plenty of time ahead of them. construction is excellent. still love the #1.
bigharpoon Posted September 27, 2013 Author Posted September 27, 2013 Thanks for all the responses! I'm glad to see the No.1 getting some love. Todd, Bandyt09, an insanely generous BOTL is sending me a No.2 to try out. I'll see if it unseats the No.1 from the top spot and then it's game on, box time. I'll bump this thread with my opinion after I set fire to the No.2. Thanks again for all your help. 1
Bossman333 Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 What is the strength of both sticks? Thanks
frenchkiwi Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 +1 for no.1s ... although my current '09 box was fantastic fresh, had a wonderful vanilla sweetness to add to the dominant cedar, but i did the disciplined thing and saved a few for ageing... in the last year, no sweetness left and a bit boring! will leave the rest for a year or two and see if they come back to life. Anyone else find this with no.1s?
Savoy Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 I like the #2's...sometimes those boxes of 10 work.
bigharpoon Posted October 19, 2013 Author Posted October 19, 2013 Thread bump to let everyone know I smoked the No.2. While it was a very good cigar I decided to put an order in with Rob for a box of the No.1. I got more flavors out of the No.1 and enjoy the handfeel of CGs more than robusto. Thank you to everyone who chimed in on this thread, Todd who gave me the No.2 to try and Rob who handpicked my box of No.1s for me. Cheers!

We both each bought a box. Right now this is one of my favorite cigars in my Humidor. My current Robusto Rankings: Juan lopez 2 Epicure 2 Partagas D RASS Honestly I would pick any of these cigars as they are all excellent. Last month Partagas D was my number 1. Its good to have Selection.
LeafLover Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 JK 1 cabs own a lot of real estate in my fridges
kws2004 Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 I prefer the #2 more cause i like the bigger Robusto formats the most. Well its up 2 you. Bigger cigar, more tabak= bigger smoke
mk05 Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 I prefer the corona gorda size but I much prefer the flavors of the No.2 and I find it to have more JL typicity… 100% in agreement.
bigbanana14 Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 Stuck with the same dilemma. Anyone has experience with recent boxes?
subport Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 I have a box of each. Cant stop smoking the No1. The 2 went deep down to the bottom. Maybe one beautiful day about 2 yrs from now... go with 1. No questions. And no its not crap quality at all
