El Presidente Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Smoking one this afternoon...is there anything close in the world of Churchills for sheer tobacco goodness or complexity? Great Esplendido come close...but even young, Winston reins supreme
PaulP Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Never understood those who say they do not have the time to smoke a churchill. 1
Guest rob Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 A staple of mine for sure.... I feel blessed to have had the good fortune to try the best of them too! An early turn of the century one still stands as my most memorable and delicious cigar experience to date.
Stalebread Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Had one from '03 last week. Outstanding. The one or two I've had from 2011 are also good.
Colt45 Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 A fave of mine. For me the churchill battle is between the SW, BCG, and Hoyo churchill.
Oscar300 Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 I recently got a box of RYJ Churchills and a 3 count of Esplendido's that I picked up on me hols, all look great but alas, between 12hr work days and the English winter it may well be next summer before any cigars touch my lips......never mind a churchill sized wonder Glad there smoking well prez, they are on my summer hit list when I get the chance!
CaptainQuintero Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Sums up everything about what makes Cuban cigars great imo
laficion Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 It's tops in my book .!!!!!! It's one of the best, Even better then a Cohiba.
jangoman88 Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 i apologize in advance if this sounds blasphemous, but what's the mystique around churchills? Im just curious why some say they are better over others.
Habano Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Indeed a wonderful cigar. Winstons do seem to smoke a tad better than Espy's young. But what about comparing them when they are aged? Espy gets my vote hands down, but not by much. You really can't go wrong with either cigar and both are worth going deep on and aging yourself. What surprises me is the price difference between the two cigars. Winston's, when you can find them seem to be so much cheaper than the Espy. Back in July I stocked up on several boxes of the Winston's for around $325 a box from an LCDH. Espy's on the other hand are approaching the $500 mark. Quite the difference. 1
Ginseng Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 A special cigar. Forget about RE, LE, etc. Smoking a Sir Winston is touching greatness unlike any of the new releases of the last few years. It's a classic for a reason. As to why the churchill is revered? Perhaps because the story of the vitola's origin is mythic and perhaps because the proportions are so very, very right. Wilkey
Bartolomeo Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 ERDM Tainos are one of my favs as well as Quai Imperiales in this category Bart 1

ramon_cojones Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 I've only smoked 02 winstons but I'd like to try younger ones to see how they compare. I hear vintage espys are like smoking vanilla milkshakes though.

Wilkey thank you for some insight, im always curios why people choose ones over another. I like to try new myself as to keep an open mind.
Blakes Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Still haven't had the pleasure of smoking a Sir Winston... yet, Hopefully pickup a nice HQ box before the years out.
Orion21 Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 I love this cigar. I bought some Monarchas recently as well. I have read that they are an almost identical cigar. Some say it's a tubed version of a Winston and some say it's the Winstons that didn't make the visual cut. I don't know for sure, but they smoke very similar to me. The only difference I could notice is the Monarch was a bit more in your face. I chalk that up to be sealed in an aluminum tube since 2007. Both the Winston and Monarchs were 2007 cigars. Both had graham cracker sweetness, cedar, light espresso and cream. The Winston was more refined, but I enjoyed the Monarch just as much. Everyone should have at least a box in their humidor.

jangoman88 Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 I think I'm going to try and get a few to have and try out!

greenpimp Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Funny smoking one of my few remaining '03s by chance right now. Beautiful cigar; perfect construction, all poise, class, richness tinged with cedar... My favorite churchill by far.
greenpimp Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 alas, between 12hr work days and the English winter it may well be next summer before any cigars touch my lips......never mind a churchill sized wonder Work less, or introduce smoking while working.

The Monarch/Monarcas to me are what the Amatistas/Gran Corona brought to the marca; more body and strength compared to the usual mildness in say the Lonsdale or number 1. The Grandfather of the Mag46 maybe
